Truffles are worth more than their weight in gold according to the market and the chefs who prize these unusual looking mushrooms. In 2001, the Tuber magnatum truffles sold for $1,000 and $2,200 a pound. Wowza! I'd love to see that check after dinner.
Truffles are difficult to harvest and rare at that. My sources tell me they have to be tracked down with swine. Interesting, but I'm not sure I can convince myself the experience is worth the price tag.
Mushrooms in general are mostly water but they do seem to have high concentrations of vitamins and minerals like niacin, selenium, and potassium. Though, I'm not sure how often you would have to consume them to find out how beneficial they are.
