100 t hings your kids may never know

Contributor: Jul!a Jul!a
I see lists like this pop up every now and then, but when there's a lot of things on the list I always look. And I always get sad. My kids will definitely know about blowing on Nintendo cartridges and probably VHS tapes and popping them into VRC's because my husband's parents still use their VCR and it still works great. I do certainly hope that kids don't lose the ability to remember phone numbers.

Think there's anything this list is missing?

-Remember back when we used to always hyphenate "e-mail" because it was a new thing? Now it just looks weird to me w/ the hyphen in there.

-That there was a time before "organic" food.

I LOL'ed at "privacy."

That's an interesting list! Some of those things I didn't realize were uncommon anymore, like an answering machine. Or vinyl, for that matter, as our book/movie/music store has started stocking a huge selection.

there are alot of things on the list that I have not done in 20 years. Some things I still do, like the nintendo games. We still play the orginal nintendo.

I disagree with some things on the list:

Shortwave radio. Amateur radio isn't going away.

Terminals accessing the mainframe. Cloud computing is bringing that concept back.

Counting in kilobytes. Huh? I get annoyed when my e-mail messages need to be counted in megabytes.

Having to delete something to make room on your hard drive. Download more porn.

Recording a song in a studio. Sure, people can make their own recordings for fun but professional recordings will still need a studio with decent acoustics.

Doing bank business only when the bank is open. I can't access my safe deposit box when the bank's closed.

Waiting several minutes (or even hours!) to download something. Downloading high-def video still takes a while.

So true it's so sad to see that some of the joys of my youth are gone and will be forgotten.
