Anyone ever used Heifer International for gift-giving?

First the address is heifer.org/gifts - and I hope its ok that I share about this.

I'm thinking this year of asking my husband to spend half of his budgeted money (or maybe more) for me here on EF but to also consider using Heifer to send something to someone in need in another country. For instance, you can send a heifer or an ox - or a portion of a heifer or ox to help someone else. I thought since I used to be a rabbit breeder (even though I don't breed rabbits) I would consider asking him to send a trio of rabbits ($60) or even just a share of rabbits ($10) because I know how much joy they bring to my life and the manure they give helps as fertilizer. They also have flocks of chickens for $20.

I just think this is such a neat way to help someone else and maybe do something nice in honor or memory of someone you care about.

My mom gives through them frequently. I think that it's a rare useful one in the sea of questionable-outcome charity organizations in that it actually gives the recipients a means of sustainable support without a lot of outside interference, rather than just a "fish for a day" handout.

Thanks for sharing the link

I haven't used it yet, but I think I more than likely will in the future. They send out small catalogs occasionally too - I got one just today! I think it's a great idea too, and there's a wide range of pricing options too, which makes it doable for just about anyone.

We lost my mother-in-love two years ago and I'm thinking that this Christmas I want to honor her memory with a gift from here. Haven't decided which one yet but I think it would make her so happy if she was still with us.

I became close to some one with Heifer after meeting on a plane. One of those haven't I seen you somewhere before moments. Anyway; I became quite familiar with their operation. They are a fabulous organization and quite passionate about what they do. I ran a dairy farm in Central America at the time and donated frequently.
