Is barefoot summer strolling gone?

Contributor: Bignuf Bignuf
As this last long weekend of summer past, we noticed something. As "teens" of the "flower power" sixties, in downtown, small town southern America, on a nice, hot summer day, you would never see girls with shoes on. We were ALL barefoot. Even the movie theater where I worked and the diner next door "forgot" about the (even then) "no shoes, no service" rule, in summer.

This weekend we noticed, while strolling downtown on a sunny HOT afternoon, none one single girl (or guy) without tennis shoes, or sandles. Not even much in the way of "flip flops", really.

So we were wondering, is this true "everywhere" now...and as THIS EF group tends to be younger (from what other polls say), may we assume that, other then maybe a beach or nice manicured grassy park, "barefoot summer strolling" is gone?

I'll sometimes go barefoot around the house, but I usually have my slippers on. I never go barefoot outdoors.

At the beach, or on the grass in a park/field, sure. And I'm barefoot at home too (inside, outside on the deck, in the garden, etc). But I wouldn't walk around outside (on the sidewalk, in stores, etc) with bare feet... the idea is kinda gross to me. Walking where shoes have been is dirty!

But feet are pretty washable I mean, I'll hose them down after coming in from the garden, it wouldn't be too hard to get into the same habit after coming in from outside.

I've seen too many "Monsters inside of me" to walk around anywhere but home barefoot.

I love being barefoot, but I don't walk around town, stores, etc. without shoes.

My favorite shoe company, TOMS, does a "One Day Without Shoes" awareness campaign each spring, and I participated one year. While it was glorious walking around barefoot, I was repeatedly told I'd have to leave a store, my uni's cafe, etc if I didn't immediately put shoes on. "No shoes, no service" remains the rule.

I only walk barefoot in my apartment, in my parents' house, and in my parents' yard. There are too many broken bottles, rusty nails, and other dangerous things lying around on city streets and even in the sand on beaches these days to risk bare feet. On another forum I belonged to, one lady was absolutely worry stricken, because she stepped on a used hypodermic (that had blood and drug residue in it) while walking in the sand on a local beach. She had to get all kinds of tests done.

I usually don't go barefoot because the bottoms of my feet get attacked by tiny rocks and debris. That and the pavement gets pretty hot.

We are older too and southern. We both have shoes off as often as possible and wear sandals or slip ons until it's freezing outside.

I don't like to be barefoot generally, I get cold easily and my feet are the first place to catch the chill. That said, bare feet on grass feels glorious. I'm shoe'd much of the time, but I will go barefoot in parks and outside in my neighborhood

I love walking barefoot in the Summer. I actually love to walk barefoot allllll the time. I'm a southern baby and according to my mom even at a young age you could hardly ever keep socks or shoes, or clothes, on me. The socks and shoes still stand, lol, but I manage to keep my clothes on now.

I'm either barefoot or in stupidly large steel-toed work boots. If I have my druthers (ie, I wouldn't actually be kicked out of a business, or nothing would fall on my feet) and it's summer, I'm barefoot for sure.

I don't go very many places barefoot, only very select locations. Nowadays there is too much litter, garbage and disgusting stuff on the ground to step on.

I feel I need to disinfect my shoes after walking outside, I could never go barefoot.

In town it's a rarity to see someone not wearing shoes (that may have to do with the fact that we have over a dozen shoe stores, here), but in parks, the local hills, and the green outside my house, I often go out with no shoes in the summer.

At home I am always barefoot, and perhaps about half of the time when I am in my yard or at someone else's house. Otherwise I always wear shoes. I would be worried about stepping on glass or a sharp rock or something like that.

I can't say I pay a lot of attention to peoples feet, but I haven't seen anyone out in stores and such without shoes. But I live in a area fairly far from beaches. Perhaps its more of a beach/boardwalk sorta thing.
