Busy intersection etiquette

Contributor: Rossie Rossie
You're the first car in line at a busy intersection, your light turns green and it is safe to proceed; do you cruise slowly through the intersection, or accelerate slightly so more cars behind you can make their way through the busy intersection also?

I'll cruise slowly through the intersection, I don't care about the cars behind me.

I'll accelerate slightly so more cars can pass through the intersection before the light changes.

No, I always speed up so that I'm not moseying along while other cars could be going. I'm pretty good about that. I don't like to hold up traffic, but I won't go way over the speed limit just because of others being behind me. Just speed up slightly.

Other. It kinda depends on the intersection. Some of the ones here, you have to go slowly, because there are always the red-light runners. When that isn't the case, I move more quickly to allow others to get through also.

it all depends on what the traffic around me is doing, and if there are pedestrians around me or walking in the crosswalks.

Right, I did respond to your thread back then, and my pet peeve was similar to what this thread was about -- I cannot stand drivers taking forever to let go of their brakes (when the intersections are clear and it's safe to go), then roll slooowly through the intersection...aaarrgg h!

I try to hurry up before anyone gets mad and driving unsafely.

I hate trying to get through an intersection, and then just as I'm about to cross, it turns red Because of this I try to get through as fast as possible, yet still being safe, so that as many people as possible get through.

I don't drive. I think people who drive here are insane.

It is utter chaos at intersections here... no one really stops at lights, they all just go willy nilly... but somehow and someway it works!

I don't drive that often anymore, but when I do, I make sure it's clear — very important here, as there are a lot of folks who go through as / just after the light changes — and as soon as it's safe, I accelerate pretty briskly.
