Have You Ever Had Food Poisoning?

Contributor: Wicked Wahine Wicked Wahine
I was overcome with the most violent food poisoning about 1 AM today. So bad I couldn't move at times. I am still barely alive, but thank goodness I have periods now where it settles enough that I can lift my head & type.

Thank God there was a cell phone near me so I could call for help. My dad got me to the ER where I received speedy service after messing up their waiting room. That, by the way, is the secret to not waiting forever, just have it coming out of both ends so they have to clean it up! I was so sick I didn't even get mortified about it.

Unfortunately, I have so many allergies, there was little they could give me. At least they stopped some of it & I still have the IV in, (Dad's a physician, so they let me leave with it hooked up & some extra bags of fluid). I am still paying the price in waves, but I am much better than I was. Seems my system revolted quickly, so I got most of "it" out of me. Now I am "just" sick, not dying.

So, since misery loves company, tell me if you've ever had food poisoning! And what made you sick, if you know?

For me, it was either veggies or a mini ice cream pop. I think it was the ice cream & thank God it was tiny! Forgive me if I don't check back in on this thread as fast as usual...

Oh goodness! That sounds terrible! I did have food poisoning once, but not as bad as you are having it. I was on vacation, of all places, and we had gone to eat at a place called "The Little Italian Bistro." My friends all had pasta...I had steak...in an Italian restaurant. My mistake. I became violently ill during the night, but managed not to wake anyone up - I don't know how! We headed home the next day...I had a fever of over 101, and I was just miserable. I couldn't keep anything down. Oh, and my friend who was driving got out of a speeding ticket because when she was stopped, I was hurling out the opened car door. My neighbor was a nurse, and she suggested I eat saltines with jam. That was pretty disgusting.

Feel better soon!

Of course I have to laugh at you a little!!!! I have had food poisoning so many times from eating questionable foods.

I've had it so many times that now the only way I get through it is to be optimistic about it. Best colon cleanse you will ever have, easiest way to drop a few pounds.

I think it was my third year here in China, I had food poisoning about every two or three weeks. It s hell. The pain the aches the not being able to sleep, to be so thirsty but nothing stays long enough to quench that thirst. And every time while you are heaving and all that is left in you is oodles of bile... Ad you just want someone to kill you because it would be easier....

But be thankful you over there in North America have four ply extra soft tissues for your tuchus!!!

Very strong fennel tea and cool wash clothes on your forehead.

When you start to crave real food, you know you are almost back to normal!!!!

Oh that's terrible! I've only had food poisoning twice.

The first time was when I was only five. My dad and I went out to a local steakhouse on Easter and we both ended up with food poisoning. It hit us at exactly the same time and we were living in a small 2 bedroom duplex with one bathroom. My dad had it coming out of both ends in the bathroom and I was stuck puking (among other things) on the kitchen floor so it could be cleaned up easily. My poor mom had to clean everything up while we puked all over the house.

The second time wasn't as bad. I ate some bad cafeteria pizza in junior high. I threw up every 60 minutes (seriously, exactly 60 minutes apart) for a good 12 hours that night. I got no sleep and was dry heaving and throwing up any water I was trying to keep down by the last 4 hours of my puking spell.

Food poisoning sucks. I'm sorry Wicked Wahine. Feel better!

That sucks! Glad to hear your on the mend (well, compared to earlier I guess).

About 3 years ago I got salmonella poisoning. From the Cheesecake Factory. I had a salad with chicken in it that was undercooked. Maybe I would have seen it if it wasn't for the dim lighting.

Yeah, I was pretty bad for 8 days. I was so thirsty at times that I chugged water even though I knew I would pay for it. You know its bad when you have to figure out the logistics of multiple spewing ends.

Because of that incident I will never eat there. I also don't eat cheesecake because while I know the cheesecake didn't do it I ate it at the time (protective biology and all that). I also don't eat mixed salads that have both greens and fruit. It was the first time I tried that, too. Also, those those crunchy Asian noodles they top salads with.

When I first got better I didn't eat chicken, salad, or balsamic vinegar for weeks (in addition to the aforementioned stuff). That was hard to do in a college dining hall, but I was nightmared. Now I just stay away from the mixed style salads, the noodles, and most cheesecakes.

Sure hope you feel MUCH, MUCH better fast. Food poisoning is no fun. Been there, done that. Did they give you some Zofran ODT (dissolves on tongue). It is a potent anti-emetic medication without a lot of side effects and not many people are allergic to it. Also, here is a little trick your doctor dad may have already helped you with. You can take a little isopropyl alcohol pad, and just sniff it deep, about five times. DO NOT put it into your nose...it can burn tissue. Just sniff it. That can significantly suppress the nausea, BUT...it will only work about once every 24 hours or so. Doing it more then once offers NO benefit or further relief. That one "sniff" session can offer up to an hour or two of real nausea relief.

Sure hope you feel better quick.

Oh no, sorry to hear that and I hope you are feeling better.

I have had food poisoning before and it is so yucky. One reason I will not eat from Burger King anymore. I got a bad case while pregnant for my son. I try to stick to foods I always eat, I tend to get sick when I switch to try something new.

I never have. My son got real sick and we had to take him to the hospital last year. He left his milk out for too long.

Myself, my sister, 3 of my cousins and 1 of their husbands all got food poisoning at the same time. It was the absolute worst night of my life.

I had quite a few throughout my life. A couple of years ago I had one on a first day of my new job. I really did not want to ruin the impression so I made an attempt to go ... only to pass out 50 meters away from my house.

I've had food poisoning from Chinese food. I took my child to the babysitter's, turned around and went home. I then proceeded to sleep for about 18 hours of that day (not counting waking up to puke or use the toilet otherwise).

Aww that sucks for you. I got food poisoning once and it was the worst feeling I ever had in my life. I was bed ridden and I wanted to die. I also have a puke phobia, so I kept it down for a long time before I finally gave in and figured it might make me feel better to just do it (it did briefly each time). I was doubled over in pain, roommate was out of town and I had no help til the next day. It hurt and made me feel worse to roll over to my other side and then would make my head spin too.

It turned out my coworker got it too, I found out on Monday (both of us had the same chicken sandwich at lunch Friday). To make matters worse, we played basketball after work and were dehydrated some..I got home late and ate a weird concoction of leftovers or quick meals, because I didn't feel like cooking..Chicken a la king and Pasta w/marinara and something else...bad mix of foods.

It was weird how it came on so suddenly. One minute I felt great..the next like death.

I hope you feel better...sounds like your experience was even worse.

I suspect what gave it to me was a hoagie with mayo that was unproperly refrigerated. Ewww. But I was really young (it was on a Girl Scout trip actually) and I didn't know anything about food safety and such.

Anyway, wishes your way for a speedy recovery!

So sorry to learn that you were ill Wicked Wahine, I certainly hope that you are fully recovered by now.
I have experienced several bouts of food poisoning, but not nearly as severe as what you described. I know where I got mine though, my late wife was not a particularly good cook, food sanitation was not her forte and she often ate different food from what she prepared for me...
I don't have that problem with my GF, thank goodness.

Thanks, RonLee, I am all recovered, but surprisingly, it took almost 2 weeks! I was really surprised.

Recently, a tree took out all the power and all the other lines going to the house. By the time it was repaired, I lost all the food in the freezers and fridge. After the food poisoning, you can bet I was not willing to risk trying to salvage any if it, LOL! Since the popsicles melted completely, that nothing in that fridge freezer was safe. Good thing I had them left over, they were the only thing I could tolerate after the food poisoning! Ironically, they were what helped save me from getting it again!
