I think it a brutal modern gladiator game. Rather than instant death in front of the audience, football players are subjected to life long disability and shortened life-spans. It's estimated that for every year in the NFL a player's life-expectancy drops by 3 years. No doubt this is partially the result of the 10 years of playing for free before turning pro - but the impact is the same.
