Tips about EF I wish I knew about sooner

Contributor: Kindred Kindred
In the most recent Community Events Committee (CEC) meeting (link, we discussed a lot of great ideas. Among them was the common theme that newbies can easily be overwhelmed by how much the site and community have to offer. While there is still some discussion as to how best to present all of this information, I was thinking we could start making a list of helpful tips that we didn't necessarily know about immediately.

RSS feeds: I tried to read every review when I first joined but was frustrated with how quickly new reviews posted. The Review Page only lists the 30 most recent reviews. Similarly, the Community News Page only lists the last 60 reviews. At the rate reviews are pumped out these days, reviews are quickly bumped off the page. My solution, which I didn't learn about for a few weeks, is to subscribe to the RSS feed. That way, I never miss a review again. How do you do that? For those unfamiliar, simply select the little square range icon on the Community News page and subscribe using your reader of choice.

Alerts: Did you know that you can set an alert and be notified by email on a number of different things on the website? You can set one for an out of stock item and be notified as soon as it is back in stock. You can set one to be notified any time someone posts a message on your wall (this should be set by default IMHO). Following a forum thread you're really interested in? Yup, you can set an alert to be notified anytime a new post is made.

So share a few helpful ideas you have come across that you wish you knew about sooner.

Mentor program should be offered easily as soon as you think to submit a review.
Maybe a small button at the bottom, like "Publish" and "Preview"
And there should be a small note, mentioning the mentor program.

Under Alerts, you can also set one for a comment on another's wall, review or when they submit a new review. If they write for Sexis, you can set an alert for when they submit a new article.

That there's a Product Search feature for when you're hunting for that next assignment. Yeah, it took me forever to find it and I had no idea what everyone was talking about. In your "Account" view, click "Review Program" and in the new menu on the left hand side of the screen will be the "Product Search" engine. You can apply your material preferences, a price range, and if you don't want any reviews done on the items.

I would have liked there to some reference to the mentor program in the review program guidelines.

I agree with this! I know for a fact that my first two reviews would have been better had I known about the mentor program first. I have learned a lot from my mistakes on my first two reviews, but wish that I would have known about the mentor program before I published them.

Best Thread Evah!

Hey, Can you 'favorite' a thread so you can access it easily in the future? I wanna keep up with this one?

Yes you can! Click that tiny little heart on the left side of the thread title. It then becomes a "favorite" thread. And then when first enter the forum, you can click the "Favorite Discussions" button!

And any thread you've posted to (not merely participated in a poll, and excluding comparatives), will appear in the "My Discussions & Posts" section.

Related to forum threads, when you re-enter a thread you have previously read, you have two options at the top:

"Last post I read" takes you to the past post since you were previously here so you can just read the new ones, and

"Go to last post" takes you directly to the last post, regardless of any new posts since your last visit.

The Product Search feature is also useful to find items that are either discontinued or no longer available since the regular search feature filters these out.

Affiliate Code: Anyone can get a personal affiliate code that provides the user of the code with a 15% discount on any order. A lot of people don't realize that you can use your own code for the discount.

View Actual Product Size: On every product page, there is a small ruler under the product image that says "view actual product size." By clicking on this, it opens a tool that allows you to view the product in actual size and compare it visually to other toys you might have.

I think this is probably the most important feature for a new reviewer to know about.

Related to this, you can also request coupon booklets that you can pass out to anyone you come in contact with and you get a percentage of whatever they buy.

I've given them to servers at restaurants, my tattoo artist, someone at the sex toy party I just went to... not to mention IRL friends that know what I do.

The Alerts are so useful. At first I didn't know how to keep track of a discussion I was interested in on the forum. The Alerts made that much easier.

I forgot to mention in my original post that you can set an alert any time you see the little yellow bell icon on a page.

You can even set one on your OWN wall, so you know when people leave you love notes!

When you're returning to a thread with a lot of posts you've already read, you can skip down to the new posts by letting it guide you to the last post you read! Right below the thread title is an orange light bulb that says "last post I read."

This button will disappear when there are no new posts, but you can skip down to the last post on the page by hitting the 'last post' button.

Everything!!!

I am a regular member for about sixish weeks now, and I am a Luddite. So many things confuse me about this site, but the viewing of the items have become second nature, and the Forums as well.

My only question/suggestion is there like a buddy system in place? Someone who I can bombard with questions about how to do some of the member programs?

There is, of course, the mentor program, which you can join to get help/advice about the review portion of the site.

There is talk of setting up a buddy system but it's not there yet.

I'm happy to help you, though, if you've got any questions (and I'm sure there are loads of others who would be happy to help, too!)

If you're so inclined, shoot me a message by scrolling to the top of the page, selecting 'account' and then going to the 'messaging' tab on the right side of the account page. You can then select 'compose message' and type on the recipient's username and write away.

I came across this one totally on a fluke a little while ago... let your mouse hover over a person's screen name and VOILA! A little box appears. And in that box you can message a person without any worries. And it tells you a little about the person you are trying to get in touch with.
