Well besides the typical clothes and personal items (depending on the nature of the trip).

If my trip involves public transportation (train, bus, plane), I have to have at least one book on my person along with my headphones.

So I can avoid awkward small talk with the people around me.

My passport!!!! LOL!!!

I put in my ear phones even if they are not plugged into anything. Then I can hear the announcements on the loudspeakers AND can avoid any conversations with those around me if I choose. Not to mention, I can be sneaky sneaky and listen in on their conversations.

I cannot travel without my lip chap. Train/bus stations, airports and any place indoors, is always so hot and dry my skin and lips just dry out no matter how much water I drink. So in my carry on bag, I always have a small towel, some luxury soap and lotion as well to wash my face and apply oodles of lotion to protect my skin.

Ipod and a book. It it is over a week, my laptop is nice. My own bodywash because hotel soap sucks.
