What Genre of Books Do You Read?

Contributor: Kynky Kytty Kynky Kytty
I'm an avid reader, but what I like in terms of books is quite limited. When I was young I would read a lot and a lot of fairy tales. My father encouraged this by buying me fairy tale books from other countries and culture. When I grew up, I would only read fantasy novels and actually have a collection of the best fantasy books I've read, and read again and again.

So, what do you mostly read?

Is there an option for 'everything listed and then some'?

I'm an original bibliophile, and about 3/4 of my household still in storage (waiting to be picked up and divided between my ex and myself) is comprised of books. If anyone reads the webcomic 'Sinfest', I'm the bookworm Criminy with his book-fort and scholarly knowledge.

It really just depends on my mood. I usually go for fiction, either classics or contemporary, or humor (I love to laugh), but every once in a while I want to read smut, the trashier the better.

I like nonfiction, cultural studies / social commentary, and memoir best, but if the fiction is written well, I'll give it a chance.

We're also big magazine nerds here - which is nice bite size reading when you only have a few minutes. Popular Science, Popular Mechanics, National Geographic, and so on.

I devour a book every day or two so, as I get older, I get less picky about what I read simply because I've read so, so, so much.

I could fill my home and my parent's home and a few garages with all the books I've read.

Frightening.

Yeah, I am going through all my books in the next few weeks because we're making a new bookshelf unit and I need to pare down. Thankfully, our library is only 5 blocks from here too.

I will read anything that seems interesting, but I selected the genres I frequent most. I have always read fantasy and horror, even since I was in elementary. I love series books, good ones, because I hate to read a really good book, get to know the characters and then it's just over. I still read romance novels, but mostly series. My favorite is Diana Gabaldon's Outlander Series. It's much more than the typical romance. Not many sex scens at all, which is a bummer, but lots of historical fiction that spans the decades of Scottish and American revolutions.
I love Stephen King. As for fantasy, my first series was Peirs Anthony's Xanth Series. I've long since out grown them, though. I was reading the Sword of Truth Series from Terry Goodkind until it became exhausting! Those books are nice and long, which I like, but it never gives you a break from conflict. I guess the romance reader in me wants them to stop all the fighting for a bit and just spend some time at home...lol. Still, I read six of them before stopping.

I've always been a reader. The only ones I don't get into are mysteries, love/sex stories, and crime.

For the last few years or so, I've been getting more into zombies and horror.

I love Stephen King, Patricia Cornwell, David Sedaris, Chelsea Handler, Harry Potter (!) and historical biographies or true crime. Sometimes if a graphic novel is really compelling, like Preacher or Watchmen, I'll read it, but I mostly stick to Humor or Horror.

I just bought The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo...has anyone read any of this series? I've only heard good things about it.

LOVE The Valley of The Dolls! Read it at least once a year. Other than that I really llike True Crime and fiction. Love the Sookie Stackhouse books...The ones that True Blood is based on...and as always the books are SOOO much better!

Wow. We read all the same books. I'm reading The Girl Who Played with Fire now. I finished the dragon book obviously. Several of us at work are devouring the whole series. The first two are excellent and I'm told that the third one is too. Dragon is out as a movie and Fire will be out this July.

We have bookcases in almost every room. Even in one closet. Plus a wall of books in the living room.

Being surrounded by books raises my spirits.

I've grown up surrounded by bookshelves. My father would usually buy more old and used book than he could read. I guess I took that from him.

My collection of books are by Anne Rice, Anne McCaffrey, Elizabeth Haydon, Terry Brooks, David Eddings, Robert Jordan, Jane Auel, and Tolkien. I've got the special editions of the Tolkien books illustrated by Alan Lee. I love his watercolors.

I also read romance and sometimes erotica, but the romance is mostly when I'm learning a new language, since the vocabulary is not very complicated as a general rule.

Stephen Kind is one of my favorite authors. My mom has a bookcase dedicated to every single book he's ever released, even under pen names, lol.

I think my favorite was From A Buick 8 if you've read that one.

For the most part I'll read it if it catches my eye. I love true crime stories. I read so many of them in high school, but without the time to read extensively now, I settle for CourtTV, lol

I think I let a friend borrow the paperback before I read it. I can't remember too much about it. Now, I don;t let anyone borrow anything!

I'm not so much of a Stephen King reader. I tried reading "The Stand" in 4th grade (right after the tv movie came out) and then tried reading "The Gunslinger" and couldn't get into it.

I also love how some of us are into the same authors/books!

I'm reading the Sookie novels now.

I'm not into all of Stephen King's stuff, but I have enjoyed a great deal of it. The Green Mile was another favorite. Movie makes me cry every time, but I enjoy the mini series in text as well

I hope it's an actual movie and not a little cheesy TV made thing! I am so sick of those because so many of them turn out horribly.

I read all 1140 pages or whatever...took like a month and I had to do a 60 page book review on it in 8th grade. NIGHTMARE but the book is great.

I saw It when I was 5 and read it when I was like 10...terrifying haha. I didn't face the shower head during showers for a few years.

OMG Alan Lee is awesome! The murals he did for the backdrops of the movie were AMAZING! The concept work was gorgeous as well. I have the special editions also and some antique versions of the Hobbit. I am a bit of a book collector.

I have a first edition of The Great Gatsby too as well as Sherlock Holmes and many Agatha Christie.

My ex read David Eddings. That long series of books by him... can't recall the names, but I read them too. Pretty good.

IMDB has this on it right now, the release date has been changing for about 2 years now, but they've got writers now and that's more progress than I've seen in the past. So this one I don't think they're gonna fuck up by making it a made for TV thing, and if they do, I'll refuse to watch it. At least I'll tell people I'm refusing to watch it. I'd probably secretly tape it, lol

I think the most epic book I have ever read is the Arabian Nights. I read it about 15 years ago. And it was amazing. If you like tales, you'll love this masterpiece.

I have to read it again.
