I will let them get out their initial talk but then politely decline and hang up the phone. I've never purchased anything from a telemarketer.

I often don't answer if it looks like a telemarketer. Otherwise, if it is a live person I tell them to NEVER call our house again. If I want to buy something, I'll find it myself.

My husband always says, "I'm busy right now." which then gives them an out to call again and again and again. If you tell them not to call and they do, it's actually against the law in many states.

What happened to the No Call list? I didn't have telemarketers call for years, and now they are.

It bugs the shit outta me.

Once my family used to get a constant stream of calls till we got rid of landlines and just used cell phone. Occasionally a machine will still call but not often, the annoying thing is I get for reason I don't understand a lot of text message spam offering to buy used/junk cars.

I won't answer the phone if I don't recognize the number. Usually telemarketers call from 800 numbers, blocked numbers, or out of state numbers, so they are pretty easy to avoid.

I've done work as a cold-caller before. I wasn't selling something; I was asking for money for my school to people who were connected to it. But I was shocked at how horrible and threatening people felt comfortable being with me on the phone.

So I do know it's annoying to get those calls. But please don't curse or threaten violence or something like that. We actually don't mind if you hang up on us. Saves both of us energy, time, and frustration. Or you can even be funny and say "you have the wrong number" or something. Cause if we knew that the changes were zero, then we'll stop calling! No one actually LIKES this job so cut them some slack. They're just trying to pay bills and put food on the table.

Yes!

Some of my friends have blocked IDs, and I get business calls all the time from people whose numbers I don't recognize, so I take the calls.

As soon as I realize it's a sales call, I POLITELY ask to be removed from their calling list and then end the call, usually with the same polite "have a nice day" kind of closing I use for any other call.

That person on the other end of the line is a regular human being who's working this job because they have bills to pay, just like the rest of us.

I try to listen to what they have to say because I know how uncomfortable it can be to have that job and be hung up on.

I always think about the poor people who have to call...I'm sure no one is having fun doing it! And as a person who has also worked on the phone (not as a cold-caller though), I know how much it hurts when people are jerks when you're being polite and doing your job.

I usually listen to what they have to say, and then say no thanks. I hope that maybe that is a call they get audited for or something and can score a 100% with their bosses.

telemarketers are extremely annoying to me ... i get them calling for sales, donations .. all sorts of crap - and i'm registered on the do not call list. i give them one chance, then i store their number in my phone with a note of when they called. if they call back i report them for harassing me and calling when i asked them not to.

HOWEVER - even worse, are the fools brave enough to come to my door with nonsense. i have 3 pitbulls and 1 pit/rott mix, who although look very intimidating they are truly sweet babies. i point to the floor in front of me and tell them to "protect", they will line up and sit between me and the person. needless to say, they only come once.

I try to wait until I can get a word in and say "Thanks, but I can't buy anything right now." I then ask them not to call again, if they do.

I am on the do not call list but sometimes they do end up slipping through so I will go add my name back to the list. Then sometimes they piss me off and I will hang up on them after I have told them I am not interested a couple of times.

I don't think it's rude. It's one of the best ways for a call to end that you don't want to be involved in. Trust me, I preferred that when I had that job!

THIS. The number of telemarketing calls has skyrocketed lately, and mentioning the do-not-call registry has had no effect on the blockheads. I really wish telephone companies would offer their customers a feature to prevent calls from certain numbers from connecting in the first place.

Most often, I simply won't take the call if I don't recognize the number. I try not to give the telemarketer a hard time though. It seems like a tough job. At the same time, I will not put up with rude telemarketers. Don't call me and then be rude when I politely decline whatever you're hawking!
