Words you hate!

I've seen a few different discussions on a specific word, for instance, "moist," that some people don't like, it grosses them out. Well, I have a few I find don't sound at all like what they mean/sound horrible to my ear. So, I'd like to know what word(s) each person has a visceral, negative reaction to, for whatever reason.

Here are my two least favorite words which sound, to me at least, to be anything but what they mean:

Fecund - sounds like something is decaying! As if you might hear someone say, "Watch out, you don't want to step in that fecund slime mold!"

Bucolic - sounds like a disease! "My baby was so miserable, we found out he had worse than regular colic, he had bucolic!"
---------------------- ---------------------- ---------------------- --
What they really mean, (from dictionary.com):

fe·cund - /'fek?nd/ - Adjective
Producing or capable of producing an abundance of offspring or new growth; fertile.
Synonyms: fertile - prolific - fruitful - productive - rich

bu·col·ic - /byo?o'kälik/ - Adjective
Of or relating to the pleasant aspects of the countryside and country life.
Noun
A pastoral poem.
Synonyms: pastoral - rural

Okay, what are YOUR picks?

"Jawn" - a slang word found mostly in my home city, Philadelphia.

As for it's meaning? ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING. Seriously, it's basically used as a replacement for almost any noun. Which means that sometimes it can be hard to tell if a user is talking about a person, place, or object. It drives me nuts!

To me, 'Moist' is a word I always use in reference to baking.

I used to be offended by certain words. I worked out my issues and no longer am bothered by things like this. I think most of the things that offend us do so by our choice.

I chose less being offended, and being offended much less frequently, it's an easier life.

"Hate, "love", "best" and "favorite". I have a problem with people using these words much too loosely.

I don't think it's so much as to be offended by words but to just having words you don't like because they sound off or seem like they would have a different meaning. I don't think many people take real offence to words lol

A sexual word I don't like- vagina, it just sounds so nasty to me, I think vulva is quite pretty sounding in a way but just the way you pronounce vagina just doesn't sound like a very good thing to me. I think it's the gi in the middle that does it.
That's all I can think about right now.

I hate the word cunt. I've heard it used as a derogatory word so many times that I can't see how it could ever carry a positive meaning.

Fag, that word irritates me to a ridiculous point. but hey, I think the word is offensive, and others don't, so I just ignore it.

Thanks, snowminx, that's right, I'm not talking about taking offense at a word, I don't like the sound of the words, plus, I find it humorous that my 2 examples sound do far removed from what they mean! Likewise, I also find 'vagina' to sound somewhat harsh, due to the long "i". When I say invagination, it sounds fine to me, weird, huh? But, I welcome any words people don't like, for whatever reason, offense at them is just one reason.

@ Rin, I never heard that before, but I'm all ready annoyed with it,

@ Gary, I know, I think food or soil when I hear moist, but I just finished reading this 7 page poll, link on just the word 'moist' & all the people who can't stand the word; I was very surprised!

@ P'Gell , I agree, I don't have the time or energy to be offended by a word, however stringing them together or using them in a hateful way can offend me. Some words have no meaning except to be offensive, for example, nig**r and I accept that most people will be offended by them. Mostly, it's actions that tend to offend me. But my examples are just words that sound "wrong" for what they are representing. I ask that whatever the reason, people mention words that they have a negative reaction to, I didn't mean that to only cover words they find offensive.

@ Mr. John, the late hour & the space restraints led me to choose a less than perfect title for this discussion, but I opted not to name this discussion: "List the Word(s) to Which You Have a Visceral, Negative Reaction" I didn't think I'd get many replies to that title. So, I know my current title illustrates your point, but'hate' has been used like this for so long, I think it's here to stay, sorry.

I agree, I also don't like the way it sounds! I guess we just don't see the beauty in re-claiming the word for womankind, hmm? I may hear it & not freak out, but I will never use it or like it.

@ Hentialover, I don't like the sound of 'fag' either, so I don't use it, but, yes, it's often best to ignore it.

This is really more of a word I hate for it's meaning, but people use the word "retard" a lot casually and it really irritates me because my best friend is autistic.
Back on topic... I too dislike the word moist. It just sounds uncomfortable.

Mam, but how is someone going to refer to me if they don't know my name. I'd like to reinvent that word to something more pleasing to hear... I'll think of something... eventually.

Oh, good call, completely agree with that!

@ ~Minty~, whatever word you hate, for whatever reason, is what I'm after, so your example is perfect! Ever notice those throwing that word around are never the mental giants they think they are?

Fag is the one that makes me cringe because of the hatred behind it. I also am not a fan of the words cunt and tits. Cunt because my dad used to call my mom one and I have no idea why I don't like the words tits.

Of course there are all the words with offensive intention.

The word 'race' makes me cringe a lot.
Horrible word because so many horrible pictures appear in my mind.

And I hate the word 'again' if people use it when they ask me like: Where did you buy that piece again? ... New attitude again?
I really hate it.

I'm with you on that one!

And if I hear an adult say, "I have to use the little boy's/girl's room," (used for restroom), I will barely restrain myself from saying something rude.

Ha ha ha. You are right, flatulence also sounds bad to my ear, but surprisingly appropriate for the what it actually means!

But speaking of words we hate, I hate 'fart'. I will never say it, just as I will never say 'pee', 'booger', or 'boobs'.

So, Rin, is "jawn" like the use of the word "smurf"? Point that out to everyone who uses it - they'll quickly stop, I bet.

The misuse of words bother me more than anything.

I started a discussion on that, it was part of the Hall of Misspelling Shame : What words do you see misspelled/misused the most? Not as many answers about misused words, but there are some & the entire thread is pretty funny. Maybe you could add some misused words to it?
