I am not really sure what to be more outraged over --- the fact that this is actually being drafted for legislation or that a woman supports it!
Arizona State Legislator, Terri Proud, wrote to a constituent using a state emaiil account saying:
"Personally I'd like to make a law that mandates a woman watch an abortion being performed prior to having a "surgical procedure". If it's not a life it shouldn't matter, if it doesn't harm a woman then she shouldn't care, and don't we want more transparency and education in the medical profession anyway? We demand it everywhere else.
Until the dead child can tell me that she/he does not feel any pain - I have no intentions of clearing the conscience of the living - I will be voting YES."
This is in response to a voter expressing her opinion on the bill and essentially asking that she vote no, instead of yes. In addition to the proposed ban on abortions after 20 weeks, they also want to make it legal for doctors to withhold information from patients to prevent abortions, and defund Planned Parenthood. This is also in line with their desire to make it legal to fire women for using birth control if it is for non-medical reasons, forcing women to disclose the information to employers.
What can we do as women, to band together, and scream loud enough for our voices to be heard? It's obvious that the people who are being paid to represent us are not doing what is in our best interests even when we've written to them and asked for their support. How can we fight back in a way that will be meaningful and effective?
