There shouldn't be pain involved. If you are experiencing pain, you are doing something wrong.

1. Relax, relax, relax. Being nervous is causing you to tense up, which is causing the pain.
2. Use 3 times as much lube as you think you need
3. Start with a finger on yourself.

First thing to do - start playing with yourself. Masturbate however you like and get yourself very excited, then put some lube on a finger of your other hand (don't move back and forth between your anus and vulva/vagina!) and run your finger around the outside of your anus while you continue to masturbate. Do this a couple of times to get used to the feelings of anal.

Then, when you're fully comfortable, doing the same thing slowly insert a finger during masturbation. Leave it in place.

Next move it around a bit.

From there, move on however you feel like doing it.

The first thing to do is to search the dozens of previous threads on this subject. There are dozens with hundreds of helpful hints. I'm kind of tired of retyping the same information over-and-over.

I've thought about keeping a "VVFAQ" file for cut-and-pasting, but whether I type or paste I've decided I'd rather put it up again than have someone potentially injure themselves.

Try a clean finger with silicone lube

Bill220 is right, there should NOT be any pain!
The most important thing you will need is lube (silicone preferably) and a little relaxation. You can start with your or your partner's finger (you can use condoms or latex gloves if you wish to cover the finger).
If you would like to use a toy get a smooth and hygienic one! I personally prefer glass but stainless steel and silicone are excellent as well.
As far as shape of toy goes your options are pretty open so long as it has a flared base or bulbous end. Never use a straight toy anally! It can enter too far and get stuck! Some people prefer to start with plugs and insert them during masturbation or intercourse. Others like beaded or ribbed toys (like Icicles No 2) which can be tugged, tapped, or thrusted.
Have fun and be safe!
