I've never really understood small butt plugs, and I was wondering how many had used them to start their anal adventures? They don't seem to be much bigger than a finger, and they certainly won't stay in like a plug should. I started out with fingers and worked up to a 1.5 inch butt plug, and smaller toys seem to be more annoying than pleasurable
Help me understand small butt plugs

I used them. I personally never liked fingers in my ass much. I don't like finger nails there at all, and then when it's out it can't just be placed to the side until I can wash it like a small plug can! While the smallest plug I ever had was kind of "eh" I have used many other smaller ones that are about finger sized and I can say that, for me, they were definitely pleasurable and not annoying. But, everyone is different and each person will go about things a different way.

1.5" is a big plug for a beginner. Like Alicia we've found 1-1.25" plugs to be a useful starting place. Using your fingers has a certain benefit - but if you use that logic - you can use 3 or 4 fingers and go much wider than 1.5".
Anyway - to each his own.

Fingers are rough and they have nails. They also can be harder to clean (note that wearing a glove can help improve all of these). They're also a bit more cylindrical rather than conical.
While I did start with fingers and other toys, a small conical butt plug can be a good way to get things started because it's small, soft, smooth and tapered. I do still recommend fingers in gloves for starting out because you can do so much with them and get to know if you like anal play before buying anything.

I am a fan of anal sex but still have questions about these plugs. Is your goal to manipulate and thrust the plug or maintain it inside during sex?

I don't understand small plugs either. 1-1.25" plugs tend to pop out.

I think they're more to accustom your bottom to having something in it and for experimentation rather than for holding the plug in.

A lot of people are grossed out by putting a finger in their butt. It is as simple as that.

I have to agree with Alicia. I don't like fingernails and nonlatex gloves can get pricy (I have a mild latex allergy). A finger sized or slightly larger plug helps me to warm up and it is actually rather pleasurable. I R very tight assed so starting way tiny and working up is the only way I can tolerate anal play.
