Argh! It stinks!

Contributor: KnK KnK
So I decided to accept a rubber toy for an assignment and I just can't handle the goddamn smell. Is there anyway to make it smell less icky? I was extremely tempted to spritz the foul-smelling thing with perfume, but I figured it could end up smelling worse and I probably don't want a perfumed dildo up my vag...

Any ideas, or is it doomed to be a stinky un-loved toy?

I'd suggest airing it out, that sometimes helps. You can also clean it really well. I've found that the climax bursts cleaner will leave its scent on toys that can pick up scents, but it smells good, so that's not a problem, at least for me. Flavored lubes if you can use them are also a good choice for covering the smell during use too.

Sorry, whether it's rubber or jelly you can't get rid of the smell. If you can't ignore it - return it and stay with silicone, glass, metal, ceramic, etc.

I, too, have a toy that stinks! I've had it since last october and it still smells. I have tried everything. I have tried flavoured lubes, but then it's just sweet and stinky! LOL

The scent diminishes over time but never completely goes away. Washing it thoroughly can help reduce the smell temporarily.

Is it a Basix dildo? I have one too. The scent at first seems to be mild and somewhat fruity. But if you leave it out, the scent spreads. I'm less and less enamored with the smell every time I take that toy out. I wish it just had a rubber scent, not the fruity, perfumed scent.

We have a Sil-A-Gel realistic vibe. It was our first toy, we've had it for years, it's been washed.....hundreds of times, it still smells. We haven't used it in a long time, but I've kept it, because My Man grew attached to that big dick. (LOL!) Nothing we did got rid of the smell. Every once in a while, when I clean his underwear drawer, I know when I've gotten close to the back (it is a huge drawer) because I can smell that toy.

I don't think there is much you can do about it. Maybe try the Climax Burst, but it it continues to smell like the toy cleaner, you know that stuff is in the pores of the rubber.

Ugh. I actually just accepted a rubber dildo for a free review as well. I normally wouldn't touch rubber, but hell, it was free. I'm not sure if I'll end up regretting my choice or not and hope I don't have to dread opening the package, since I don't even like the smell of condoms.

Rub some baking soda onto the dildo and let it air out for a few days, rinse it off thoroughly afterward. if that still doesn't kill the smell then mix 1 tbs of Unscented Dawn with a gallon of water, dunk the dildo in it and let it soak for few more days.

Honestly - has any of this worked or are you just guessing?

The smell comes from the plasticizer that makes the rubber or jelly soft. Once the plastisizer is gone - the rubber or jelly harden and fall apart - so when the smell is gone - the toy is dead!

I suppose you could leave in on your dashboard and after ten years of sun exposure all the plastisizer is gone - and you dildo will stop smelling.

Some rubber just doesn't stink. I just received the Bondage Duckie to review, and he has virtually no smell at all.

I think it depends on the kind of rubber or what they add to it. But, I agree with Gunsmoke, if it smells, chances are it will for a long time, perhaps the life of the toy.

Sorry.

worked on the Doc Johnson Kong, it didn't completely kill the odor but it's not noticeable unless we place it under our nose. and no, not all rubber dildo have strong odor, some are worst than others.

I have had sil-a-gel that stinks to high heaven. in a last ditch attempt to get some of the smell out (and going through all the hand washes and body washes in my bathroom) I gave it a purell bath. squirted a big dollop in my hand, rubbed it all over the toy, left it for about a minute and then rinsed it really well. It did not get rid of the smell but it did seem to diminish it. Unless the purell just burnt out my smelling buds for the night LOL

I don't know if this will help but what about rubbing alcohol? I have one that stunk and I just tossed it out the smell was awful and it was a nice dildo.

We had one that smelled horrible. After cleaning it countless times and letting it air out for long periods of time, it still stank. To get rid of the smell I simply put it in a sealed plastic bag and placed it in a can out at the curb. A couple fellas came by in a big loud truck and eliminated my problem once and for all.

I've tried rubbing alcohol - zero impact.

You can also try soaking the smelly rubber dildo in coffee or white vinegar mix with water (1 to 5 ratio) overnight then let it air dry.

If it's anything like SensaFirm, Sil-a-Gel or PleasureSkin then it's gonna stink for life.

I've had a SensaFirm and PleasureSkin for 18 months and they STILL reek! I have tried all sort to rid the toys of the smell but nothing.

I even tried Bi-carb which normally draws odors out - it hasn't helped at all and it's been sitting in it for 6 months.

Perfume will just make the smell worse unfortunately and yeah, I wouldn't want perfume in me either.

This may sound strange but I even tried using toothpaste and strong mouthwash (Listerine) on mine to kill the smell. It does tone it down a little for a short time but then it comes back just as strong before long.

The only good answer for a smelly toy!

I will have to try this. I have one that I love but the smell makes you want to gag.

We have a jelly dildo that my wife loves - but the smell - like yours is awful. After trying all these things I replaced it with Vixen Johnny - she was so glad I did. The Vixen has no odor (silicone) but is soft to the tough and skin-like in texture - first time she said 'that's a keeper!'

Ugh, I have one too that smells like plastic watermelon. Nothing makes the smell go away, NOTHING. In the future just stick to different, unscented materials (they're usually easier to take care of anyway). That's the route I've taken anyway.

Have you had any luck so far, after these suggestions?
I would try most of the things listed just to see if they'd work. I mean, even diminishing the smell just a bit might save it from a return / the trash can.
Baking soda and vinegar will both try to absorb the smell. Coffee will definitely mask it, along with some of the other soaps and mouthwash suggestions.
Sometimes though, a toy just smells so bad you can't use it.
