Any water-based lube will dry out pretty fast during masturbation - there's just too much area exposed to the air. Maximus is pretty good, but users will still need to keep some water handy (perhaps a small spritzer bottle, so you don't get too much on and wash off the lube).
Maximus is a bit bitter as well, so if there's a likelihood of the handjob becoming something else it might be good to avoid.
Oil lubes work quite well since they don't dry out, Boy Butter is about the best out there as it cleans up easily. The downside there is that it's better to take it off of anything that will go in a vagina.
I've tried out some suggested "easy to find in the home" substitutes, and body lotions absorb too fast (and can irritate the mucous membranes), and coconut oil doesn't stick around very long either.
