Talk to me about TPR

Contributor: Positwist Positwist
I just reviewed a TPR toy, and I realized I could use some perspective. This was my first and only TPR toy, so I have no frame of reference w/r/t the material.

It felt plushy and tacky, and it... sweats? It gets greasy/sticky/ew and smells of rubber no matter how thoroughly I clean it. (Fear not, I retired it and dissected it.)

In your experience, does all TPR sweat, or just crappy TPR? Does all TPR retain a smell? Anyone have any experience with TPR melting (without coming in contact with other TPR toys)?

Anyone know what the heck it's sweating out?

Usually if a toy feels sweaty or greasy, it's leaking pthalates. I've got one or two toys made of TPR that don't do this and don't smell rubbery, so I can assure you that the material's not always like this.

I figured it can't be leaking anything good.

Good to know that not all TPR is like this. I'll try not to avoid it with the same insistence than I avoid other non-silicone soft toys. Thanks, Rin!

There are actually two different kinds of TPR: TPR and TPR Silicone.

If you use silicone lube with a TPR Silicone toy, you'll break down the material of the toy (like dissolves like).

Hope that helps!

Sweats? Sounds more like jelly but that could be a cheap TPR toy you had. I have quite a few TPR toys and none of them have done anything like that and the smell is all but gone.

I just got new anal beads made out of TPR silicone today. No issues here.

I agree with the above posters. I have had several TPR toys in my time and never had these kinds of issues. They have no smell, they certainly don't sweat, or anything else like that. While silicone is my preferred material, depending on the toy (and what it's fore) I'll still consider using TPR.

Some companies notoriously mislabel products too, so you could do a bit of investigation on the company's website about it if you wanted. Sorry your first TPR experience was so lousy!

I don't like them much, I find them lint monsters (worse than silicon). But I have never had those troubles

Thanks everyone! I think this thing might be mislabeled as TPR (by the manufacturer; Eden's description jibes with the info on the product's packaging), especially if none of you have had this experience. Time to get my hands on a real TPR toy to see how it compares.

I'll shoot CE an email and see what happens.

Yikes! Leaking Pthalates?? That doesn't sound good in the least.

My TPR toys are just a little bit plasticky smelling, but never sweat or leak. I'm under the impression that most TPR is pthalate-free as well.

Sounds like you either got a bad batch or it's been mislabeled.
