Not, if you take them off in a reasonable amount of time, 15-20 mins or so, or until they are no longer comfortable. So, when it's no longer snug, it's time to take it off.
The jelly or silicone ones would be best for a beginner, as they are stretchy enough. I'd advice to stay away from the metal ones until you feel a little more confident with them.

Actually I had a really horrible experience with a toy that was a variation of a penis ring. I was masturbating with it, and the build up of blood within the veins became so intense that one of my veins ruptured and the blood pooled under my skin about half-way up my shaft.

...That was my first experience years ago with cock rings.

However, if you get one that is flexible enough (I'm partial to silicone!), do not use it until you are already erect, and remove it immediately after the session is over, you should be ok.

I would stay away from the metal ones period! the thought of one of those getting stuck on my partner is scary!!! And listen to both of those other comments above! they give great tips.....also if you leave the ring on too long it can cause tingling and numbness!

Like most things when used as directed they work fine. My favorite ring is the steel Omega - it looks great, feels great and works great.

In general you may want to avoid commenting on things you have no experience with. If you had a partner who experienced what you described - that would be valid. But for you to guess about what or might not happen seems to be without merit.
