For me I guess it would depend on what was said. More than likely I would just leave it alone if its something completely derogatory or threatening then I would contact support.

Nothing, just ignore it

It really depends. Usually I will message them privately and it usually turns out that it was misinterpreted. Context is SO hard to read over the internet.

In many cases I will ignore it, but lately I find myself just wanting to know why people are so rude. The world has lost its common courtesy to me and I want to know why.

I would just ignore it. No sense in starting an argument here

Ignore it.

If something is nebulous, I'm most likely to say something like "I might have misinterpreted you there, could you clarify?" in the thread and a lot of times it will just be a misunderstanding.

If it's something that's clearly and objectively malicious or rude, I'll just ignore it.

Typically leave it alone unless it's really bad. Then I might report it to EF. I'm not interested in getting into an argument. If it was extremely defamatory or threatening I might report it.

I would ignore them on the forum, however depending on the issue discussed, I might contact them and try to work it out.

Usually I ignore the comments or try to politely respond on the forums. If the comment is terribly rude or hurtful I might write an email just to find out if I have been mistaken about the intent of the person making the comment...this is a print medium and sometimes what is meant as a light hearted comment or even heartfelt advice is taken wrong. I prefer to give the benefit of the doubt whenever possible though I am human and sometimes I write a nasty reply and usually delete it before hitting send.

Ignore it, unless its constructive and they are just being honest. If it can help you a little bit then you should comment. But if it's just plain rude ignore it.

Thanks for the input everyone

As for possibly misunderstanding, Im pretty sure that person was being nasty about it. Maybe they just have that "sense" about them though. I know some people that are blunt and just don't have that filter between brain and mouth lol....they don't TRY to be rude, its just their nature I guess.

However, I took it as rude. I don't want to cause an arguement about it, but there were a few folks that had commented negatively about it, and had agreed with the other person, so that was why I was kind of like "what the heck!?"

Its not that I want to start an arguement. God knows I have enough drama of my own in R/L....It just somewhat floored me to see a few folks react the way they did to my post. I read back through my posting, tried to see their point of view and maybe try to put myself in their position. I simply couldn't see how they could come to calling me greedy? The comment was something along the lines of: "Ef offers enough free stuff, stop being so greedy"

I dunno. I guess it just irks me because I am usually such a sweet person and try to be nice and make friends with everyone. I guess it left me a little dumbfounded when I was approached in that manner. Then again, someone was right in saying that its hard to read "tone" in text.

Anyways, thanks for all your input everyone. It wasn't anything serious, It just bothers me when people tend to have the wrong impression of me or my thoughts. Thank you!

I usually just ignore the comments like that, unless I can prove that it was a personal attack of sorts. It is very hard to read tone from text, so I usually try to give people the benefit of the doubt.

Well, before I posted this discussion, I had asked exactly why there was a problem with what I asked. But as for anything else, Im just going to ignore it. I agree, its very hard to read tone from text. I just think that sometimes folks should be careful how they word things. Cause it didn't offend me so much as it did confuse me lol.

If it's defamatory or threatening, I'd contact a mod. If it's a friend, I'd talk to them privately. If it's a stranger, who cares.

This is the perfect response.

It really depends on the situation. I mean, if the comment/response sounds rude but could be interpreted a few different ways, contact them to be sure you're not getting the wrong impression. The intonation of text can sometimes be tricky to pick-up on.
If they're being downright mean/rude (saying things that are clearly malicious), then ignoring them or contacting a mod is the best plan of action.

Yeah I agree. Just ignore it, because in the end... what does a rude comment on an online community really amount to in your life, ya know? And most people are totally unaware that they've been rude, or that what they said could be interpreted as rude. And those that try to be rude... well there's no reasoning with them anyway!

Funny that you say this. I once made a broad response on another topic that is well supported by those in the medical psychology field. One of the members took wild exception and chased me into private messages. I just laughed it off.

I leave it alone. Its hard to get a read via text sometimes. And I tend to take things to the darker side of the mind. So I always think things are a personal attack. There are a few times though where you just can't shake a comment someone has left. It makes you wonder why these people are even on this site. To a lot of people this is our Fortress of Solitude, so it's hard to see someone shooting you down for asking a question you had no idea was asked a hundred times before. Or posting a forum topic that has been beaten the ground. It puts off other people. It makes you question yourself before you ask. And thats damaging for a site like this that promotes open minded people to talk freely and discuss anything. But hey, look at it this way....are there any rude comments on this forum topic...didn't think so. Why? Beacuse they know better. Don't worry. They'll move on...
