Luxury Vibrators- Worth it?

Contributor: Darling Dove Darling Dove
As I've come into some money lately, I've decided in my next order to try some 'luxury' toys and more expensive lubricants. However, I've always wondered, being the type of girl who hunts for the best deal all the time- Is there really a noticeable difference?
For example, the Onye, or Nea, or Mia... all somewhat high end toys.
Would I FEEL a difference between that and a pocket rocket, or a $8 waterproof 3-speed bullet that gets me off just fine? Is there truly enough of a difference to warrant getting luxury toys? If the highest rating is 5 stars and some cheaper toys warrant this, is there a difference between a cheap or moderate level toy's 5 stars, and a luxury toy's 5 stars?

This is something I've always wondered... of course, I will be finding out on my own, soon. Nonetheless I'd like to hear other opinions.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I think a lot of cheap toys *can* beat out more expensive competitors most of the time. My favorite vibrator of all time is the Xtreme pack G-spot bullet, which is about $30. However, my favorite dildo of all time is an $80 glass dildo.

So it's entirely possible that you could get an expensive vibrator and think "I could achieve the same effect with this other cheap toy I have." But it's just as possible that the toy could blow you out of the water. I mean, some of the expensive toys have some interesting functions. And... they're usually made of better materials, so at least there's that.

I know the feeling.

The truth is that while a lot of expensive toys seem to be quality (made well), they are perhaps not worth the cost you pay. Safer materials do warrant a slightly higher price tag, in my opinion, because you can't put a price tag on safety.

And, obviously and sadly, an expensive toy is not guaranteed to work for you . . . or even better than lesser valued toys. I don't think you'd feel the difference, really.

I paid much below the listed price for my Gigi, and I still wonder if I should have spent as much money as I did on it. It has multiple intensities and vibration patterns, and it's covered in silicone, and it's rechargeable. I like her, and she cute, but the price sends shivers down my spine.

I wouldn't recommend an expensive clitoris toy. They just don't seem to be worth the money just for external stimulation. ALTHOUGH, the Mia is to-die-for adorable.

Yet, I'm contemplating buying a vixskin dildo . . . DO I EVER LEARN?!

You know the saying "you get what you pay for".. well that saying all too often applies to sex toys. The difference between luxury and well "cheap" toys is the options they offer. Do you want a toy that's rechargeable or guzzles AA? Do you want a toy that's made out of a SAFE, clean, nonporous material that lasts or one that you have to cover with a condom and that will eventually start to break down after a year?

The differences between luxury toys and nonluxury toys are endless. I have several luxury toys thanks to Edens... link, link, link, link, link, link. All these toys are INVESTMENTS. Basically, if you find the right luxury toy it will replace all your other toys.

You have to do your research though. You have to read specs, features, reviews, google it or whatever because luxury toys require a substantial investment. Ultimately, the toy you buy will be the toy you use for a long while after. I'm a bargain hunter too so I will tell you that you can find cheaper alternatives as many higher priced luxury toys here on the site, you just have to look. The search features help you find what you want- want a toy that's hygienic or nonporous just like a luxury toy, check those boxes off! The same goes if you want them to be silicone or rechargeable. Just do your research before you commit to buy, that's the best advice I can offer you.

I think that luxury toys are a worthy investment. Of course, you need to decide how much money you're willing to spend on them before you make a purchase. It might be helpful to visit a brick and mortar toy store just to see the toys in person, hold them in your hand, and feel their vibrations. I started out with inexpensive battery operated vibrators and have come to the conclusion that I spent more on batteries and discarded toys than I've spent on luxury toys. They certainly provide me with more aesthetic and sensory pleasure than their inexpensive counterparts.

I am getting the xtreme g spot bullet as well as some luxury toys... I plan on writing reviews for everything I get, so we will have to see what happens when a normally frugal girl gets her hands on high-end toys! Of course, that is, if my darned bank ever gets their butt in gear. Don't you just love having money, and not being able to spend it because of technicalities? lol.

EXACTLY my thoughts.

A luxury toy is an investment, and it can be good or bad. If I plan on spending more than $50 on a toy, I read a lot of reviews about it, compare it to other toys, and check it out at a store if possible. That's why luxury vibrators have yet to fail me--I'm super picky--and toys less than $20 that suck don't bother me. I obviously didn't plan on making a huge investment there, so I'm not super-distressed when a cheap toy fails!

I've tried lots of toys in the last few years, and I have to admit that luxury meant quality in ways that I never imagined. The Liv by Lelo was awesome. It has multiple vibration patterns and controllable intensity. It could be about ten different toys by itself. It's silicone, g-spot designed, easy to hold and wonderful on the clit. The Njoy isn't cheap, but it's wonderful. I love the feel of glass more than vibration a lot of the time and some of the higher end glass toys- I've never regretted purchasing.

I've come to the conclusion that I'll probably never buy luxury level toys again, honestly. It's too big of an investment to take a risk on for me. At least with games or pc hardware or other things, I can resell it or give it to my friends and it's not a total waste. However, I'm just going to take this as a lesson learned and get what I can out of them. The Onye was worth it for me. The Lelo toys weren't. At the very least I'll probably never buy another Lelo toy. Too expensive and not enough kick. The brick and mortar stores here didn't have any Lelo toys in stock at all.

Glass, I can attest to glass being wonderful. Some Phallix products are intensely overpriced though since I can go to the sex shop down the street and get a Don Wands or other smaller brand name toy of the same size with all the pretty art flares for $40-50 whereas a pretty Phallix piece will run you a hundred or more. I dunno, this has just left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth about the whole situation. I hate spending $50 on something you aren't certain you'll like at all.

I would compare functions before making a purchase. Some more expensive toys have a lot to offer. There are toys that recharge and offer more power than the less expensive types. There are also MP3 enabled toys as well as internet enabled. Some of the materials are worth the cost, such as glass and silicone. Some I think would be well worth the money if the function is of value to you. But if all you're looking for in a sex toy is the ability to get off, cheaper ones suit just fine. There's also the question of how long the toy will last. I think a person could get more out of a luxury dildo than a luxury vibe with standard functions. I would look at my current toys and pick a favorite. Look at it's features and compare to a luxury item that is similar. If the luxury item offers more versatility than the current toy, it should be worth the buy. But unless it offers more power, an exchange in rechargeable or power cord instead of cost of batteries, a better material or a longer lasting toy, I wouldn't invest the money.

@DarlingDove Maybe you'd like Fun Factory vibes better. I love their Sinnflut Intensity and Delight and so far, I'm not overly impressed by Lelo vibes. I've had Nea (a bit weak, and then she just died) and I've tried some other Lelo vibes in the store. They're just not strong enough for me but they are well-made and have interesting vibration patterns and a year's warranty. Fun Factory, on the other hand, never ceases to please.

I've been wondering the same thing! I've never tried a super expensive toy so I don't really know but... maybe they are better? Or maybe they last a super long time so you don't have to keep buying cheap toys? Hopefully someday I can buy one of these super spendy toys and see for myself. lol. But until then I'll be going for cheaper stuff, $40 at the most for me. I don't know about the ratings... It might not me an accurate representation of what the toys are really like...
