That string can harbor bacteria. Even with cleaning. You can't clean it completely. Silicone can be boiled or washed in bleach to clean anything off of it.

For a beginner I would suggest the smaller silicone beads. I would try and stay away from the ones on the string. Not only is it difficult to clean but it can tend to be rough when they are being extracted especially if you don't have a sufficient amount of lube on it.
