Sex Fact: Better Condom Usage

Contributor: Kayla Kayla
Want to take yourself from a “typical” condom user (85 percent effectiveness) to a “perfect” condom user (98 percent effectiveness)? The I Love Orgasm Authors give you seven very useful steps to follow to perfect your condom technique.

1. Test-drive condom brands: Try out a variety of different brands to find the perfect fit and thickness for you. Different brands have different measurements, and there's a ton of variety for you to pick from.
2. Check the expiration date: Carry a condom “just in case”? Well, if it's been there awhile, it may be expired and not nearly as effective. Make sure to always check the expiration date on a condom before you use it.
3. Be careful how you open the wrapper: Make sure to take care when opening a condom wrapper. Using teeth, scissors, or any other sharp object can accidentally tear the condom!
4. Put a drop of lube inside the condom: Many guys find that condoms are much more pleasurable when lubricant is applied. Don't overdo it though: you wouldn't want the condom to slip off. A drop or two is usually enough.
5. Leave space at the tip: Many people forget this one, but the proper use of a condom requires making sure that the tip of the condom should have all of the air squeezed out of it when putting the condom on.
6. Don't flip it over: If you've started to unroll the condom, but you realize that you're unrolling it backwards, do not flip it over and re-use it. Get a new condom. Because the tip of the penis could have pre-cum or STIs, you need a new condom to get proper efficiency.
7. Hold on as you pull out: Make sure to hold onto the base of the condom when you pull out to avoid the condom slipping off. Also, make sure to withdraw promptly after orgasm.

These are really good tips. I have mistakenly used an expired condom once when I was younger but as far as all the other tips I have been successful at remembering all the things I learned in sex ed Thank God!

There should be a courtesy tip at the end saying "Please don't remove the condom by pulling the tip of it. It will fling everything everywhere." Yuck. Hahaha!

I've known and followed these tips since I was a teen. It a good thing that I did, because all of the guys I encountered were completely clueless about how to properly use a condom.

With the exception of withdrawing promptly after, yup, these tips are followed. I actually find condom use sexy.

I'm hanging out at Dodson and Ross's site frequently and Eric who blogs there also advises to use an elastomer (TPE) cock-ring to prevent slippage.

@ NarcissisticLust - me too. Got imprinted when I watched a scene from Nina Hartley's anal sex guide.

I follow the tips except for number 4. I've never put lube inside a condom. Maybe I'll have to try it. My boyfriend's penis is usually already wet with pre-cum though, so I'm not sure if it would make a difference.

now it has been over 10 years since I have used a condom, but I remember the tips for proper use of a condom being printed on the box.

What I love about these tips is how you introduced them in such a positive, challenging, sure-to-encourage-a-ma le-ego way! Instead of condoms being a pain in the butt, de-masiculating, or a barrier to pleasure/intimacy. It's a sign of being above "typical" to "perfect"! Oh I love it, Kayla!!!

Wish I saw these tips prior to using condoms for the first time. When I think about it, I should have become pregnant many times over!!
I now have an IUD but we usually use condoms for anal.

1. Yes test drive and testing several ones to find the right one is very important.
2. When you buy some, the exp date is going to be the same for all of them. Check once then it's okay until that far point in the future. Storing in the wallet is actually not recommended.
3. I always use teeth and never had a problem. One would need to be very unfortunate to tear the contom that way, you only need to bite the very edge, most of them have zigzag edges anyway.
4. Lubing inside might not be so good. I prefer it after some oral just to have some wetness but if it's lubed the top half of the condom will live on its own and be very uncomfortable because it'll just feel like it's too long. This is for uncut guys!
5. Leave space? How do you do that if you squeeze all air out? Most of the condoms have the tip, and that stands good enough for the empty space. Air is not pleasant so just make sure there is no air left.
6. I think this is mainly for people who change partners often or already have and STD/I. Anyway it's pretty easy to put it on, never really had one in the wrong direction. Precum is way too overrated in my opinion, the amount might only be enough to wet a little bit but it's not that much anyway.
7. Yeah well this is where condoms kill the intimacy. Isn't that great stayin inside your partner after y'all came? I stay erect for a longer period of time so this is not a problem for me but yeah holding on can be a good tio for those who lose the erection fast. But most often if you were somewhat dry before sex the condom will stick to you by some amount even if you are soft. Sometimes it's not that easy to get rid of it

Been married for 8 years so its been ages since we've had to use condoms, but it's nice to know the info. Never used lube on the inside, that's interesting.
