Brown period blood

Contributor: fizzygato fizzygato
Does anyone else have periods where the blood looks brown/black?

I always feel like I'm looking at what would be "alien blood" in a movie when I look at it. I've been told it's because I'm lacking vitamin B but I feel like no matter what I do it looks that way :/

Is anyone else this way also? Sometimes I feel like it should be checked out but idk

I always have red blood to start, but it turns brown on day 3. Black generally indicates blood clots, which may or may not be a concern.

This usually takes place at the end of your cycle, maybe the last day or 2. It differs for everybody when it takes place, but its certanily nothing to be alarmed about, its your body cleansing itself of the last of your cycle(this is what was explained to me by a doctor, because I wondered about this too)

It's totally normal and usually occurs toward the last few days of your cycle. The brown (sometimes black) coloration is because it is older blood that was not expelled in the frist few days of your period, which is blood that is lost as a more rapid pace. No need to worry or be embarrassed as every person who has a period has this happen to them, although some people (like those who use tampons) may actually never notice it. if you have any concerns about your cycle get in touch with your gynecologist and they can help to put your mind at ease. There are also many online resources, such as Because I Am a Women, on tumblr who has answered many questions similar to this.

Mine always does when I'm starting, sometimes for multiple days towards the beginning and sometimes towards the end, too. It's okay!

For me it starts with red blood, but towards the end it turns to brown blood, which I assume is just old... I've never had one where it was all brown though

It sometimes happens to me but not often enough or for long enough that I get concerned.

LadyLuck put it well, you are completely normal don't worry! Brown, as I've understood it, is from oxidation. I used to get worse blood clots (which is probably the black; almost big lumps) when I first got my period at 11, and they were pretty alarming looking but got better as time went on. If you still feel concerned, don't hesitate to ask your doctor! That's what they're there for!

When I used to have them, they would turn brown toward the end. It always happened on like the day before I ended.
