Changing the time of your period...

Contributor: SMichelle SMichelle
As I write this, I know it's a "dumb" question, but I can't resist asking.

In a few months time, I will be flying out to see my boyfriend. Obviously during that time, I'd like to not have my period. Partially because of sexual reasons, but mostly because when I get my period, I tend to get very sick...and I don't want to spend my vacation that way.

The trouble is, it appears that I will have my period at this time.

The trip is unable to rescheduled, so I guess I'm wondering if there's a way for me to postpone my period. Obviously there's no sure-fire way, but who knows, maybe you all know something I don't know.

If there's nothing that can be done; no big deal, I'll deal with it.

Now, I have heard of using birth control to alter the date your period comes. I will be starting back on a combination birth control pill this month.

I don't get sick when I have my period, but I do become more on the miserable side and moody. So I'm facing the same issue IF I get to go away in September.

I had planned to go on the pill all along. Problem is, I have a very long cycle (where most girls only have 21 days between bleeding, I have around 35) and I don't want that to change. So when I was talking to my Dr recently I asked if I could hold off a lot longer on taking the sugar pills, so it fits my natural cycle. She said a lot of people actually skip the sugar pills for a month or two so they only have a period every 2nd to 3rd time. I plan on doing that.

That may be an option.

Yes, you can use hormonal birth control to postpone your period, but it's not a guaranteed thing for the first few months, as you may have some intermittent bleeding. It's good you're starting this month.

Take some time and, since birth control packs are for 28 days, track out the schedule. I think I'd want to be about a week into my birth control pack when I don't want to have my period, just to be safe and have a week buffer on each side. Make sense?

Keep on top of your BC and you should be fine.

Yup, this. I've been on continuous birth control for many years now - and it does work. However, the first few cycles of doing it can still give you some breakthrough bleeding.

The only other thing I've noticed for myself is that I have more breakthrough bleeding during my 3rd month than my 2nd. I'm pretty much totally fine during the 2nd month - so watch that too. It will help you plan better.

Good luck!

If you are ok with the side effects, try Depo as your form of birth control. The other one is to take your pill each day and not having the seven day placebo. As well, talk to your doctor about it, they might have some other new suggestions that you can have access too.

Naturally, I do not know of a way of altering your period, but I can suggest ways to make it take less than the usual amount of time. Eat all natural foods, nothing (not even spices or butter or such) from packages, drink insane amounts of water each day, and exercise almost daily (yoga and cardio). Doing this for one month before my period I can reduce the the week long need for pads and tampons from seven days to three days.
