Just wondering what other people's thoughts are about this....

Plus Size Today
I already get upset that I'm considered plus size or 'fat' at a size 13-15. I was thin as a teenager but I had an eating disorder and only allowed myself to eat once a day. I just hate how weight focused America is. It's depressing. I also saw a photo of a woman with stretchmarks posted on facebook talking about being a "tiger" and "earning her stripes" and I saw a few guys comment on it saying things like "eww". It just made me feel like shit. I'm just shocked by how shallow things have become in the past couple of decades. It's just upsetting. Plus you can't watch 30 minuets of T.V. without seeing some type of gym equipment, program, pill or DVD to "look great" because you're too fat. *sigh*

I too was thin when I was younger because I didn't eat healthy, and now...I'm quite a bit bigger than I was. It does hurt that a real, healthy woman that isn't a work out freak is pictured as 'fat' or 'ugly'. People are blinded by their own ignorance and the best way to combat that is by sharing your knowledge. If a guy says 'eww' about a picture of a girl, any girl, he's probably not worth her, or anyone else's time. Let the shallow bastards think what they will about a girl who has earned her stripes. Everyone is beautiful, but not everyone is smart. Just remember, bones are for the dog and meat is for the person who can enjoy it.

that's nice. I'm kind of on the boney side and I do my best to take care of myself, so it's always good to know that the only men that are attracted to me are dogs. I'll be sure to tell my future partners that.

As for the OP, I understand that our culture is very unkind to those who are larger. No one has any right to make you feel ugly, and if you don't like what you see in the mirror, you can always change it But everyone is beautiful in their own way, and even if you don't mirror a model's body, you are beautiful. *Hugs*

I wish I had the outlook that you have. I've always struggled with self-esteem even when I was thin. It doesn't make sense to most people because I grew up with supportive family and compliments by them and others. I was picked on badly throughout grade and high school and I never understood it because I didn't fit the category that normally is picked on but girls mainly were so mean to me. I was also in an abusive relationship in high school that I kept quiet and was degraded constantly and too immature and stupid to put an end to it until my mother noticed bruises on my body and forced me to stop seeing him. I also still live at home while finishing my last quarter in school and I don't get along well with my maternal grandmother and she has made more than enough comments about my weight or 'fat ass' where her and my mother are both thin. I just hate my body. Unless I look in a full length mirror I'm happy but it's my body that makes me feel ugly. I am doing something about it though and have lost 14 pounds since the last week of November on the herbalife diet. It's just not happening fast enough because I can't go to the gym because of a recent foot injury that I'm due to have surgery for

I look at women of all shapes and sizes and see beauty. To me plus size isn't ugly but other people make me feel the way I am. I have a thin friend that thinks shes too skinny and can't gain weight because of a disorder. So it goes both ways I guess. I think shes fine the way she is! Or should I say "I" let them make me feel that way. I need to work on it.

I gained a lot of weight in grade school because of a very bad home life, and even though I lost it in my late teens, I continued to think of myself as fat for years. One thing I have learned in my old age is that if they don't like me, then they can move the hell on. I have been married 3 times to men who thought I was beautiful, and my current husband (20 years younger than me, I might add) thinks I am a dish. I just don't give a rat's ass what others think of me anymore. Takes too much energy that I could be spending having fun.

I hope you all find your own ways to get over what others think of your appearance. Loving yourself is the best feeling there is!

When I was younger I had a hell of a time keeping weight on me. I was still very curvy, but I was always bordering on being underweight (which was odd cause I had DDs and a booty). After having a child I am overweight and have developed PCOS and struggle to try and lose weight. The shift in looking at how I eat, and how I take care of myself was huge.
The worst part was realizing how truly different people treated me. I was always self-conscious when I was thin, because guys only seemed to be interested in me for my looks. Now that I'm a big girl, most aren't interested in me at all. My self-esteem has dropped more from how people treat me than the fact that I'm not happy about the weight. I think the attitude of people (guys especially seem to be bad about this) towards overweight people is pretty sad. They don't understand that it isn't as easy to lose weight as it would seem. Dieting really is not realistic, and one can only exercise so much a day. My grudge on dieting actually comes from research (I learned this recently after subjecting myself to calorie restricted diet for about a year), restricting calories causes your body to make do with less and store anything over that. It takes over a year, and often at least 2 years for a person's body to adjust to a normal calorie intake after restrictive dieting - this means that people yo-yo in weight going on and off diets. There is no simple way to start eating normally after dieting without gaining weight back, so its a struggle to make it work.
Even knowing this, when I talk to doctors about my concerns about my weight - all they ever say is eat less. Even when I was on a 1450 calorie diet (doctor suggested even), it was eat less. I hate that it is assumed that anyone overweight eats food like McDonalds everyday. I completely agree that it is just sad how focused society has become on size and looks - and commercials definitely reflect that. Even on the internet half the ads you see have to do with weight loss.

Newsflash: Women's bodies have been mocked for all time. What culture defines as beautiful may change from time to time, but our negative relationship with women's bodies has not. So don't go around saying things like "I'm just shocked by how shallow things have become in the past couple of decades". Don't be shocked. Just be informed.
