What do you hate MOST about going to the gynecologist?

Contributor: AzealiaB AzealiaB
I'm studying to be a health professional and we are learning about the pelvic exam in school. Having had some unpleasant pelvic exams myself it was very interesting learning about doing them on other people.

Personally, I hate having the pap smear done. It makes me feel nauseous and I always bleed afterwards! I know other women don't like the speculum wiggling around, some people hate it when their gyn talks too much, etc.

So in the interest of giving better pelvic exams someday, what do YOU not like about them? Any bad experiences?

Having a specific period of time that my boyfriend cannot cum inside me. But that has nothing to do with the actual gyno. Ha.

I hate making the appointment and then having to repeat two to three times why I am there. I am glad they now accept "well woman check" as a reason without asking me to explain in detail to a room full of other patients...

Waiting for an hour and a half after I pee in the cup to get brought to a room, waiting in the room, and having the appointment be over in 10 minutes or less.

The only thing I dislike is having my nether regions be a mess when the thing's done. That's my only complaint. Last time I actually took my own wipes so I could get cleaner, rather than just using tissues from the exam room.

I try to take a book for when I'm waiting, and since it's only once a year that part isn't soooo bad for me.

They don't speak English, and chatter away at me and tell me that my labia is really really really big thinking I cannot understand them.

At least they all admit I have fantastic breasts. So it sort of makes up for it.

I go to the free clinic bc it's cheaper to get bc there but OMG are they S-L-O-W and always seem to be behind schedule, expect to be there 1-2 hours. I'm just uncomfortable having anyone besides my fiance down there looking. I really hate when they try to have a conversation with you while scraping/swabbing away. Once I was complimented on my socks....lets just get it over with please, no talk.
I HATE the speculum thing, it hurts!
Once they had some other form of nurse in there because the gyno was sick and this lady was OLD, like my grandma old. She told me I had what looked like herpes. I FREAKED the eff out, got hysterical, wanted to kill the guy, wanted to blow my head off and was pretty much considering my life over. I called my mom's gyno and went in that day....yeah it SO wasn't. It was a burn (one small spot that LOOKED like a burn) from friction and lack of lubricant from a condom used the night before with a guy I was seeing at the time. WTF lady, I was contemplating driving off the bridge thanks to you?! I KNEW it couldn't be because I KNOW what it looks like but it still freaked me out. I called and bitched about it.

I feel bad complaining though because if it weren't for getting a yearly exam I could have developed cervical cancer and by getting a checkup they were able to do surgery before things got bad. I'm fine and the precancerous cells never returned.

OMG. That is really unprofessional. A doctor or nurse in the US would get severely reprimanded, may lose their job and might even face a hearing if they treated a patient like this.

I find it painful and uncomfortable. There's nothing my doctor really does wring though. She explains everything she's doing and answers any questions I have. She's quick too because she realizes herself that it is not the most pleasant experience and if there's blood, explain why! I don't usually bleed, but I did last time and that can alarm you a bit. My doctor is great.

I don't like the waiting, and the fact that my GYN shares a waiting room with a bunch of Family Pracs, so there is all manner of sick children and old people there. I prefer my GYN to have only OB and GYN patients in his waiting room. The people who take ages at the desk, thinking they have to tell the receptionist their life story (and of course, the receptionist spends ALL her time staring at her computer and couldn't care less.)

I don't like that my GYN (who I like in every other way) is obsessive about recording EVERY SINGLE THING I SAY on the electronic record on his computer during the visit. Dude, LOOK at me while I'm in there, not just at the beginning and the end. He's very young and seems obsessed with the technology. I like him and the clinic nurse, but I can't stand the nurse who answers the phone. She's always on the defense and pretends like the doctor won't refill things, when we all know he will. I've heard her arguing with patients about silly stuff when I'm in the office. Her behavior is unacceptable and I'm about ready to change GYNs just because of her. Complaining does no good, as working in health care, I KNOW all complaints go through THIS nurse and she'll take it personally and the doctor will never get your messages. She's slow the way it is.

I have a "shy cervix" and it hides during PAP tests. So, sometimes the GYN has to grab it with a ring forceps so he can get the ThinPrep brush in properly to grab the right cells. Not fun. I always sweat like crazy and get nauseous when he does this, but it has to be done if my damn cervix won't come down and show itself. Last time he was able to get cells without using the ring forceps, so maybe he's getting better at this. I hope so.

Other than that, the actual procedure isn't bad.

I honestly don't hate anything about going to the GYN, just something that needs to be done.

LOL!!! Trust me... most of the doctors here would NEVER make it if they moved to say USA or Canada.

This is a country where depends on where you are in the country, the people will actually walk up to you and without warning cope a feel of your ass or breasts wondering if they are real or fake.

The doctor and nurse had no idea that I even understood them. It's not excusable and after the exam I did tell them in perfect standard Chinese that they should at least wait till the patient had left the room before talking about their bodies.

Fair trade off... I got a compliment, and they were reprimanded by the Dean of the hospital as I said it quite loudly. They lost face, and I got a better discount on my exam!!!

Oh how I love China!!!

They do seem to take their sweet time getting to the next patient. But thankfully the appointment is over quick.

I only got worked up about my first exam, and that was mainly because I didn't really know what to expect. Really, the only thing that bothers me now is trying to make sure I'm perfectly shaved the night before. (I have extremely stubborn hair, and sometimes even multiple runs with a razor won't get it all. Shaving can take forever!)

Thruthfully, I find it easier when my GYN talks to me. It's distracts me from what might be going on down there, and if she's being "too quiet" I start to worry that she sees something wrong!

we were taught that it might be helpful if you give your patient a mirror so that they can see what's going on down there the whole time. personally i would love if my gyn were to do that but she never has. i dunno, would most people use it if it were given to them?

The verbal walkthrough is the worst for me. "Now I'm going to lube this speculum up, slide it into your vagina and take a look around." Great! Not like you didn't do the same thing last year!

Today was the first time I've been offered to see for myself! It was pretty neat to see a new side of myself.

for me, it is the speculum pinching when inserted and the pressure of the dr. pressing on my stomach too hard trying to move my uterus so she can see my cervix.
my uterus tilts back instead of forward.
