I keep thinking about getting my sister a vibe for Christmas, and I ordered it today, but I'm not sure I'll end up giving it to her. It seems a bit awkward.

Nothing is awkward unless you decide it's awkward.

That would make sense if it was just me. However, my sister is involved in this one, so if it makes her feel awkward, it's awkward.

I am not convinced there is such a thing as a bad orgasm. What would that feel like exactly?

I say give it to her. She might end up loving it. Personally, I wouldn't give my sister a vibrator because she wouldn't use it and possibly throw it in the trash. Why waste a good toy on the trash? But yea if you bought it for her then you should let her have it. Bring some good vibrations to your sister's life.

I think it would be fun! Maybe something festive, along with a book of erotica?

Does she know what you do for Eden?

Perhaps a gift card that lets her keep her purchase to herself would be less awkward?

My sister would probably throw hers in the trash too, but I feel like I want to give her that option. Our society focuses a lot on women's sexuality - but rarely focuses on women getting pleasure out of that sexuality.

Iunno though. She knows that I'm in the local kink club and calls me a freak, so this may not go over well. Suppose it's worth a try though.

She doesn't know what I do for Eden. Thus, giving her a giftcard that would let her discover my reviews would be about 100x more awkward than just giving her one.

I just ordered her present today. It's an EdenFantasys-storage bag (without the logo), some C batteries, and one of those Cal Exotics Inked Plastic Vibes since she loves emo-esque stuff and it doesn't look frightening.

People often say negative things out of a fear of their own interest in something that is perceived as bad. Your sister's outward attitude toward anything sexual/kinky might not match what's going on inside. And she might very well tell you she threw your gift away when it's actually tucked under her mattress. You just never know...

Ha! Nice description. I had some weird ones during pregnancy... lots of buildup for what amounted to a little spark. Hmph.

I know she might keep it - that's why I'm trying. We'll see what she chooses to do. I was going to include a note that says I'm not going to ask her anything further about it, but she can come to me if she wants some advice.

That's so true! Alan & I have been surprised by how many people we know who acted so negative about sex started asking us about sex toys after we started reviewing. Even my uncle (who we always thought was ultra-prude) called once to ask Alan about a vibe for his wife. It's funny how some of them come to you too... like "I'd never actually use one, but I'm curious..."

There might be a chance that she's secretly a "freak" too. All you can really do is give it to her and like you said, give her the option to decide what she wants to do with it. If she doesn't throw it away then that's somewhat of a good sign.

Exactly! That initial knee-jerk reaction is more often a result of social conditioning or upbringing or religious guilt (or whatever) than the person's actual feelings.

Look at it this way: *someone* is buying all those sex toys and erotica! I know there are only ten of us self-confessed kinky people in the world, but my budget can't support a billion dollar industry.

My mom was this way. Acted very shocked and negatively toward the idea of my reviewing sex toys (flat out said "No" when I told her I was going to work for Eden—I reminded her she had not been legally able to tell me what to do for nearly 20 years) but then, she started coveting gift cards...
