Kids aren't ever really around so that's not a risk for me, but I keep mine in a box under a pile of work related magazines in a desk drawer in my room.

I hide most of the stuff I've got in plain sight.
It's amazing what you can get away with if you keep things stacked and tidy.
I have three lockable cosmetic cases on wheels along the back wall of my home office.
The labels I've attached to the sides say "Medical Supplies", "Expired Saline (NaCl)" and "Tax Returns 2012+".
Three years and not one person has ever asked me about them.
