Do you know how to parallel park?

Contributor: Lily Night Lily Night
Not a kinky question, I know, but it comes up between my boyfriend and I a lot. So, can you parallel park? My boyfriend guesses that 85% of people can't (just like me) and hey, this is Eden, right? So feel free to post any kinky things to the bottom of this poll just to keep it interesting

I don't think it's taught in Driver's Ed anymore, but when I took Driver's Ed we were taught (and tested on) parallel parking. I think most people live in places where there is minimal chance to parallel park, so no one learns how any more.

I wasn't tested on parallel parking, but I live in the city, so I learned pretty fast.

minimal chance to parallel? i can only imagine that happening in really small towns. any place downtown that i've seen, esp. cities, have parallel parking. maybe i'm wrong.

i didn't have driver's ed at my school but it was on the test. i'm a pro at parallel parking.

I went through driver's ed and they taught us how to do it.

The poll asks if I know how to parallel park, not if I am good at it! I can do it, but it will require repeated attempts, or three empty parking spaces

I can't be the only one who doesn't know how to parallel park! I was never taught in driver's ed since I live in a relatively small town and there's parking everywhere...

i was not required to know it for the driver's test, but my dad taught me how anyway. it's been a long time since i've driven a car, but i think i could still do it if i tried

I had to learn in my Defensive Driving class for my associate degree in Corrections. I can do it but not perfect. It takes me forever to get it right! I would rather just park and walk further if I have to. If my fiance or someone else is with me I get out and make them do it if we have to. I'm so damn short and it's hard for me to see what I'm doing even if I lift my butt up off the seat! I need a booster lol. We didn't have to do it in order to get our license to drive here.

It's trickier to do in my van, but in my car I can fit into a space that isn't much longer than the car is.

I can, but I end up looking like that scene from Austin Powers where he's stuck between two walls in a golf cart.

Yes. But since I'm a new driver, and I don't drive often I haven't gotten too much practice at it. But my mom explained it very well to me, so I have a good grasp on it for when I need to!

I asked my drivers ed instructor to teach me but he declined saying I didn't need to know how in South Dakota. What if I moved to a more populous area?! Ugh...

It's on our driving test here. I don't know how to parallel park, but I also don't really know how to drive. I don't have my full licence yet.

Yes, I can parallel park, but I avoid it at all costs. I can do it, just not too well when I'm in my big ass truck.

I can parallel park with no problem. I grew up around and in the city of Chicago, where Parallel parking is a must skill. You have to Parallel park when you take your On The Road Driver's test in Illinois (which I took when I first got my license and a few years ago, when I had to renew my license.)

I also have a lot of experience with diagonal parking, which is a common thing in many areas around Chicago.

My kids (the two who have driver's licensees) were taught to Parallel park in Driver's Ed. It's on the Illinois Driver's test to get your license and when you have to take your driver's test to renew your license. Most places in Chicago and a lot of other large and even small cities and the surrounding areas do not have drive ways and street parking is common.

Why would any school NOT teach this skill? If you live anywhere near a large city or even plan to visit one, it's a necessary skill.

Did they think you would never leave town?

I don't understand not teaching necessary skills. Most Americans live in large cities, or move to them after adolescence to go to college or find jobs. That's like not teaching kids how to use a stop light, because the small town one lives in doesn't have any. ALL skills driving anywhere should be taught in ALL Driver's Ed classes. I grew up in Chicago, which is NOT a hilly city. But, we were certainly taught how to park on a hill, facing up and facing down!

I don't drive any more, but when I did, I actually was good at parallel parking. My ex could not do it to save his life, but my youngest son excels at it.

I lived somewhere where I never had to so I never really learned. I recently moved somewhere where it's become a problem that I don't know how. I think I'll have to learn now.
