I need to have at least some level of light for both masturbation and sex. I have terrible night vision, and I hate fumbling around in the dark (last time I tried to have sex with the lights out, I almost poked my poor partner's eye out). I have this bluetooth speaker I use with my tablet that also has a little light you can turn on. It has three light levels, and the brightest is slightly brighter than a nightlight. It's not overly bright, but it illuminates my bed enough that I can see my toys and lube bottle, so sometimes I'll turn off my main bedroom lamp and just use that little light....but honestly, I normally just leave the main light on.
The only times I want my bedrom actually dark is if I'm sleeping or watching a scary movie, haha.
