Keeping your toys charged and ready to go.

Contributor: Hummingbird Hummingbird
Okay so now I have this arsenal of toys, some that take batteries but at least half that are rechargeable. Already I've found myself ready to play with a dead toy or have one fizzle out just as I'm getting warmed up. As a result I tend to bring more toys to keep readily at hand during play time than I actually need. So here's my thought, being in the business world and in computers I thought I'd develop ab electronic database on my iPad with charge expectancy of the toy and when it was last charged. I thought I would even put in a timely reminder of when to charge them, that would be an easy do. I developed a database before surely is would be a logical way to remedy this situation.

Now my question, always open to new ideas, suggestions and I improvements I wanted to ask what you do? How do you manage the energy consumption situation?

I remove batteries, but keep them with the toy, and I recharge rechargables after each use. I also have a large pack of spare batteries on hand.

Eri86 that sounds like a very practical solution. Your idea, Hummingbird, sounds very doable although I'm not sure how you're going to get it so usable that people will abandon ideas like eri86's.

My input seems even more grandiose. Make the interface smart so that it recognizes each toy, it's limits and it's recharging times. It would produce reminders on its own based on what toy you added to the list. With the amount of toys on the market and that are about to be on the market, the task seems a bit impossible to keep up with to me. In this case, it seems a low tech answer would be best.

Yes I remove the batteries as both of you. I like your grandiose idea though. Hmmm I wonder if I can get my multimeter to do some of that?

I would love to see some of the data you collect on charge life over time with the rechargeable toys. I know they can't last forever, but seeing how fast some or their batteries deteriorate, would be interesting.

I keep the batteries I remove, with the toy & I charge the others after every use.

I recharge our Li-ion batteries after almost every use. We use them about 2-3x per week so that works fine. If there has been some lull - I'll recharge them before using. The Salsa is notorious for loosing it's charge.

As for disposables, we just replace them when they get week. It's surprising how long those batteries last. Our Mystic Wand gets used 2-4x per week and I don't replace the batteries more than 1/month.

I always take the batteries out of toys when I'm not using them, but I've never figured out a good system for keeping plug-style rechargeables ready to go (though I've only got one or two of those, and honestly I've yet to have one go so far down that it dies during use). Magnetic rechargables, on the other hand, are completely awesome because they can't become overcharged. So my two favorites get hooked up every so often to top them off.

your charge expectancy list sounds like a great idea.

All that sounds like too much effort to me. I just recharge them when they are dead...

I agree! I would love a life expectancy with some of the expensive rechargeables.

I try to make it a habit of recharging mine once a week.
