Pets in the room?

Contributor: missymery missymery
Long story short! My boyfriend and I were getting down to business, when my dog walks in the room. He didn't try and come up, he just layed in his bed at the side of the room. This had never happened before..and I found it really distracting and odd. Like my child was watching.

Anyone else experience this? Have issues with pets being the in the room while you do?

We haven't been anywhere with pets around yet. I think it would bother me if they were in sight, though.

It doesn't bother me at all when the cats are in the room. They certainly don't seem to care either.

We have a boxer. She's just like another child to us, lol. We make her leave the room, lol.

My cat being in the room is a definite distraction. I've tried to ignore it, but I always end up giving in and having to pause the action to kick her out. It's not the fact that she might be "watching" us that bothers me so much as that I always feel like she's about to get into trouble and keeping an eye on her distracts me from the fun at hand. We always keep water by the bed to stay hydrated and I'm constantly convinced that she's about to knock the glasses over. It's just easier to kick her out and have her out of mind.

haha yea! I think of my dog as my child. So whenever I want to do anything, I always give him a bone or something and let him stay out of the room.

Yea, I understand that. I guess that's a bit of it too. I mean, I'm always worried he'll get into some sort of trouble, or try and jump on the bed! Or even start barking.

The watching doesn't bother me, it is when the dog has gotten a little too interested and got in the bed... Then we had to stop and put the dog outside of the room and shut the door.

I dont have any pets in the house. I dont think I would like the pet watching us though. Maybe it would be ok if they were in a pet bed on the floor.

It doesn't bother me, but it has bothered about half of my partners. I guess I can see why it bothers people. It actually bothers me more when we keep my dog out of the room because then she starts to cry whereas when we let her stay in the room she just sits in the corner.

Like your child watching! Lol that was funny. I know exactly what you mean! My pets are just like my children & I'm uncomfortable when they're near us.

My dog pookie is my little side kick. He has to be with me at all times & sometimes when we're in the bed doing it, he will sit down & stare! It's a turn off and hard to ignore. I'm usually pretty successful in getting him to leave. I think he's interested because he's always freaked if a person leans over me or my mother or a baby! I guess dogs really are smart & protective. As soon as Pookie sees that my partner is not hurting me, he usually gets bored and leaves lol.

I had this happen with my cat a few times. If I closed the door, he'd scratch the hell out of it trying to get in, so I pretty much had to let him in if he wanted in. But he loved attacking anything that moved under the blanket, which was usually my hands or feet while sleeping (that led to some bleeding toes). One time, though, I was giving my partner a handjob under the blanket, and the cat came in and tried to attack his penis. Haha. We went ahead and closed the door and dealt with the consequences. My cat, Tidus, can be a real dick sometimes, but I love him.

I have two dogs, and they are like family. I wouldn't want my family watching me... so not them either! I usually send them outside and lock the door since they both know how to open them... lmao. Awesome discussion!

My dog has gotten too close for comfort once or twice, but most of the time he just curls up on his little bed on the floor and falls asleep. When he gets too curious, we just put him on the other side of the door. He does not care and neither do we.

We just have a cat. This happened the other night but I did not know until after we were done and had been moving around a bit the cat was in the room. He usually lays down somewhere and leaves us to our privacy

I don't care as long as the pet isn't trying to get involved in the action.

I wouldn't be comfortable having sex if either one of my pups was wandering around. They get into EVERYTHING and still need to be supervised. I doubt that I will care if they're around when they are old enough to be trusted while unsupervised.

When My Man got a dog, one of the FIRST things I said to him was "No dog in the room when we have sex. No exceptions." Animals know what you are doing. They can likewise becomes sexually aroused. I think its simply inappropriate to have an animal in the room while having sex.

My Man had a two room apartment, and we'd put the dog into the small bedroom and have sex on a fold out couch mattress on the floor. Once we bought a house, the dogs were not even allowed upstairs.

I make sure our animals are secured in their crates when we have sex, our children are in their rooms asleep or the older ones out. I like privacy when we have sex.

I couldn't really vote in the poll, because I handled the situation before is ever happened, so I wouldn't have to handle it when it happened.

I also think its unfair to the dog, HE doesn't want to be there, either.

Crate training is, IMO, one of the best ways to train a puppy. My Man and I have had 6 or 7 dogs over the years. At one point, we had 3, 2 Malamutes and a lab mix. We now have an other Malamute and a black lab.

We crate trained our puppies, they are out of trouble, they can't hurt themselves, eat things that will make them sick, break stuff, get out of the house, get hurt etc, when they are in their crates. After only a few days, they come to see the crate as their "den" and they love it. Our dogs adore their crates, they go in them when they are sleeepy, or sick or sad, or when they just don't want to play. (Our lab also steals food, as she was a street dog, and hides it in her crate)

IMO, its the best gift you can give a puppy. They cry the first few times they are in it, but if it's the right size (just big enough for them to turn around in and get comfortable, puppies don't like crates that are too large) get a crate with a movable back, so it can grow with the dog.

Its the safest way to keep a puppy, ours know the word "Crate!" when they come in when wet or dirty, they go into their own crates at bedtime or when they are tired, and each dog respects the other dog's crate as theirs.

LOTS of play, good food, lots of good attention while potty training and using a crate is a great way to raise a puppy.

Yes, it happened to me. I was just getting things going with my toys and my cat jumps on the bed. Safe to say she didn't like me for kicking her out of the room.

Yes, it has happened, but it wasn't a huge deal. It isn't my favorite thing, but if they wander in right in the middle I'm sure not stopping to do anything about it. (Unless they're too close for comfort.)

One of our dogs had a crate when he was younger. He also loved it; we loved it since he couldn't get into trouble when we weren't watching him.

I'm hoping I can foster dogs sometime in the future, and most adoption places encourage foster homes to crate train. It makes it much easier to find homes if the dog already has any kind of training a future owner could want.

I rescued my dog, so he was already used to crates, as sad as it is. But he still loves it! But, his crate is in my room, so that wouldn't work out.
