Bath Salts 101: More than you ever wanted to know

If used as directed, you can have several sensual baths to help you relax and moisturize your skin. Although made with Dead Sea salts, I do not recommend using this product specifically for the health purposes that Dead Sea Salts are often used for. You would need to use several cups of this product daily to see any health benefits. I am giving this 4 stars because it is a nice product that does what it says. However, I do not care for the smell of the salts in the mixture.

Use

Venus aromatic bath salts are a natural Dead Sea product and designed to be used by dropping a few teaspoons in your bath water. The purpose of these salts is to invigorate your senses and moisturize your skin.

According to the back of the package, you should use a "few teaspoons" in a bath. Since they were not specific on exactly how much to use, I did a "cost per use" calculation based upon two different examples.

This product is 16 ounces which is 2 cups. There are 32 tablespoons in 2 cups. If you were to use one tablespoon per bath you would get 32 baths at a cost of 56 cents per bath. If you chose to use two tablespoons per bath, your would be able to take 16 baths at a cost of $1.12 per bath.

When I went to the product's website, I read the following statements:

These mineral bath crystals, made from 100% pure Dead Sea mineral salts and Mediterranean Sea salt, offer effective relief from eczema, psoriasis, stress induced tension, hemorrhoids and muscular pain. As a therapeutic spa bath or soak, the crystals will nourish, cleanse and refresh your skin in the privacy of your own home.

This Item is a 50/50 Mix of Dead Sea salt and Mediterranean Sea salt

How is Venus Aromatic Dead Sea Mineral Bath Salts beneficial?

Magnesium is important for combating stress and fluid retention, slowing skin aging and calming the nervous system.
Calcium is also effective at preventing water retention, but is also known to increase circulation and strengthen bones and nails.
Potassium energizes the body, helps to balance skin moisture and is a crucial mineral to replenish following intense exercise.
Bromides act to ease muscle stiffness and relax muscles.
Sodium is important for lymphatic fluid balance (this in turn is important for immune system function).

Ultimately, bathing in high quality sea salts replenishes the minerals that are critical to our skin's metabolism.

Conditions or problems that may be eased from the use of Venus Aromatic Dead Sea Mineral Bath Salts include*:

The salts were very easy to measure for use. They are dry and bead shaped and you can use your fingers to measure them if you want. I find that both the higher pineapple scent and the lower salty scent sticks to my fingers for a bit.

The actual ingredients in this product are:

Dead Sea Salt (Magnesium chloride 32%)
Potassium Chloride (22%)
Sodium Chloride (7%)
Calcium Chloride (0.45%)
Sodium Bromide (0.2%)
Fragrance

In addition, the product may contain:
fd&c yellow 3, fd&c blue 1 and fd&c red 3
    • Beads

Taste / Aroma

When you first open the package, you get a strong (almost overpowering) scent of the pineapple. As your nose gets closer to the package, the salty smell comes out and gives a lingering after-scent that is not as pleasant. I could barely smell the tangerine.

I placed 1 teaspoon of salts in 1 cup of hot water and when my daughter walked into the room from about 8' away, she could smell the pineapple and thought I had a product that smelled like pina colada. Unless I put my nose down to the level of the water, I could only smell the pineapple and it lasted for about half an hour after I dried off.
    • Smells good
    • Strong smell

Performance

The salts were great at softening and moisturizing my skin and I could feel them working even after a few minutes. The smell lingered once I dried off, for a while it was fairly strong but after about half an hour it faded away. It felt like the upper notes of the pineapple lingered more than the salty smell.
    • Absorbs into skin nicely
    • Feels natural

Packaging

The salts are in a clear jar with a dark black plastic container. As long as the cover was on tightly, it would be fine for traveling and the jar is very attractive and discreet. Due to its size, the jar would not be able to go in a carry-on bag though.

The label gives the My Venus USA website, but I found that when I went there the site wasn't user-friendly and you had to register to get much information. When I tried to place an order on there, they gave me the address for mailing a check and stated that my product would not be shipped until they received the check.
    • Does not leak
    • Would make a nice gift

Special Features

Because the website talks about the various salts having healing properties, I wanted to share links to some information I found online.

Dead Sea Salt Research

Dead Sea Salt Information and Benefits

It appears that while the minerals in the Dead Sea and Mediterranean Sea salts can be quite beneficial for many health ailments, the amount of salt that must be used per bath is much higher than a few teaspoons. In fact, it seems like it would be significantly higher than that based upon what you were using for a product.

I believe it is important to mention this because many people read about the salts and might think that the amount you are using is enough to help health issues and then wonder why they are not being helped.

I also found information that shows that many people are making their own dead sea salts by mixing them with Epsom salts and sometimes adding scents to the salts.

Personal comments

Another issue that I would like to address with the whole "bath salts" topic is the fact that the U.S. Department of Justice has issued an alert about an increasing abuse of drugs marketed as bath salts or crystals.

Venus addressed this issue here as they state that the drug that is in these "bath salts" (under investigation) is called MDPV or mephedrone. According to their release, "It is a stimulant that increases the heart rate and causes hallucinations".

In their announcement about this, Venus refers people to this article titled, "More people snorting 'bath salts' to get cocaine-like high".

Needless to say, the Venus products are free of this drug.

I thought I would include all the photos here:
