Ultra lubricant - lubricant discontinued by Doc Johnson - review by Alicia

Ultra Lube from Doc Johnson is a water based lubricant that can be used for solo play, foreplay, vaginal sex and anal sex. It's safe to use with condoms and it washes off easily. It does contain glycerin though, so if you are sensitive to glycerin you aren't going to want to use this lube. The ingredient list on my bottle does differ a bit from what is shown on the product info for this lube. My bottle shows:

Water (aqua), Glycerin, PEG-8, Carbomer, Hydroxy-ethylcellulose, Potassium Acesulfame, Sodium Hydroxide, Disodium EDTA, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Diazolidinyl Urea.

Potassium Acesulfame is a close relative of Aspartame. Aspartame differs since it has phenylalanine which Potassium Acesulfame does not, but there are still concerns related to it which are very similiar to Aspartame as most of the ingredients in these two compounds are the same.

For me personally there's a lot of chemicals in this lubricant that I'm not 100% comfortable with for vaginal use. I also wouldn't use this lube and then give oral sex before washing it off because of the ingredient list (it also really doesn't taste good or smell particularly great for that matter). We will be using this for hand jobs when I want a nice thick lube to practice some techniques of massage while giving my husband a hand job or for anal play. Since this is a 16oz bottle it'll probably last us a long long time using it this way.

This is a thicker lube than our other water based lubricant, which is the Wet Naturals Beautifully Bare. It is more of a gel consistency, which is nice. If I put about a dime sized amount on my palm and then turn my palm over it takes about 10 seconds for it to drop onto my other palm. When it drips it drips in a droplet form, like water would; it does not get stringy, which is another plus. Once the droplet sizes are a bit smaller, they will completely stay on my palm even if I turn my palm over. This lube definitely has great staying power. Once you have it where you want it to be it will stay in place well. It also glides very nicely, and turns into more of a silky liquid once warmed under your touch.

It does leave a slightly sticky residue if you use a lot and let it dry on your skin while it's still thick. If it's rubbed in though it does not leave a sticky residue. I don't find that it leaves my skin as smooth as the Wet Naturals does, but it's definitely not sticky and I don't feel I need to rush to wash it off.

There is a very slight chemical scent to this lubricant. There's not supposed to be any scent and most people will probably not pick up on any either. I happen to have a very sensitive nose though and I can pick up on smells easily, especially chemically smells. When I have this lube on my hand if I put my nose up to it to actually smell it there is a very faint smell of something. I can't really explain what the smell is, but I don't particularly enjoy it. It's not strong enough where it's noticeable during use though, which is good.

This lubricant really isn't meant for oral use. There is not much of a smell at all once it's rubbed in if you happen to get some in your mouth. It has basically a slight aftertaste but no actual smell. I can't say what it would taste like if you put your mouth to it when it was actually still a gel because that's not something I think I would enjoy.

This lube is fairly long lasting, while it does absorb completely eventually you can get a good 5-6 minutes of using it in constant motion before it is mainly absorbed. It still gives a better glide than it would if there was no lubricant used at all, but I usually reapply a bit at this point. This is with using a moderate amount as I don't like things to get too slippery. This is also while giving a hand job where it's being absorbed by my hands as well. Once I reapply I find it goes longer since my hands have already absorbed some and aren't as dry. When using it with a toy it will also last longer. For sex where you create your own lubrication, I don't think it would need to be reapplied for quite some time. I'm not completely comfortable with the ingredient list to use this for vaginal sex but I can say that this is a longer lasting lubricant overall than the Wet Naturals and I have been able to use the Wet lubricant without needing to reapply at all. Therefore I would say it's safe to assume that this would work even better.

It really is a shame that it has some concerning ingredients because otherwise I really would consider this to truly be an ULTRA LUBE. As it is though, I'm limited to the uses I can have for it. It does seem to be a great performing lubricant though and is long lasting without leaving a sticky mess. It's also a lot easier to clean up after than a silicone lubricant would be and is compatible with any toy material.

The bottle that my Ultra Lube comes in is different than both the one in the picture and the bottles described in the previous recent reviews. My 16oz bottle is an upright bottle that's orange and black with writing in orange, black and silver. It's definitely not discreet in the slightest as there are big capital block letters saying "Ultra Lube" three times around the top of the label. Some of my lubricants I don't worry too much about the kids seeing the bottle because it's not entirely clear what it's for and they're too young to make a connection. With this though..my daughter can read and it clearly states that it's lube and that it's condom safe. Luckily the flip top cap is pretty tight and doesn't leak if we put it sideways in our drawer.

There's an expiration date clearly labeled on the bottom of the bottle for about two years out from now. I do appreciate the nice and easy to read expiration date, especially since this is a 16oz bottle and will last us a long time. This way we can ensure that we're not past the expiration date.
