Fool's Gold

I really wanted to like this dress, and so did my husband. Neither one of us found it to be a flattering fit for me, for various reasons. The construction is great, and if you fit the right measurements, this will probably look awesome on you - but the weird bust and the unstretchy back band mean that this will be in the back of my closet for a good long while.

extremely useful review
I'll start off by admitting that I'm not really a fan of the color gold. I find it to be too bright personally, and I'm generally more of a silver girl. Looking at the product pictures on the page, I thought that the golden color would be more muted, and I liked the look of it. When this showed up, I was instantly let down. When I unwrapped the dress from its pink tissue paper, what I found was a couple of bright gold cups staring at me. (Think metallic Pikachu!) My husband thought it would look more muted under club lighting, but I don't really go clubbing all that often, so it'll be a while before I find out.

To give you some stats on myself, I wear a 34-36 D cup bra (depending on brand), have a 33" waist, and a 40" hip. According to the DreamGirl size chart, the large would fit me best. The sizes they recommend are: 39-41" bust, 30.5-32.5" waist, and a 42-44.5" hip. I thought the hip might be too big, but being a seamstress, I knew I could just take it in without issue. Trying the dress on, it fit me perfectly, except for in the bust.

To get a bit personal here, my breasts are both completely different sizes. It isn't obvious in a bra, but one of my breasts is a C cup, and one of them is a D cup. Usually, I don't have an issue, but the cut of this dress made this fact very obvious on me. Also, because of the vast difference in my cup sizes, I could tell that if anyone is over a C cup, their breasts are not going to fit properly in the cup portion of the dress. Smaller than a C cup might look fine if you tighten the straps around your neck more, but your breasts will not stand out. A cups beware, this dress will do nothing for you. I think the biggest problem with the cups is that they are neither lined, nor made of a very sturdy material - thus they have zero support and larger breasts just "hang" and do not stay put.

Lying flat, this measures 13" across in the underbust portion, but stretches out to 34". The rest of the dress hugs your curves and is very flattering, so I just with the bust fit better and the gold was a bit less bright. The dress is 23" long which is technically decent enough to go out in public on my petite 5'2" frame, but taller girls may need to wear leggings or keep this in the bedroom. While there is room to stretch a couple more inches, the dress fits my body perfectly from the bust down. If you have up to a 34" waist, or a 42" hip you will also probably fit just fine in this. The material appears slightly see-through when you are looking at the garment in your hands, but when I was wearing it, it definitely seemed more opaque. I would have no problems wearing this in public, if the bust fit me better.

The back of the dress is mainly open, but it does have a strap going across it. The strap has very little stretch to it at all, and closes with two hook and eyes. It measures 14" flat, and 16" stretched out. To be honest, the strap felt a little bit tight to me, and I didn't like the way it looked. I wish it had been a little stretchier or longer.
Experience
Made out of 90% polyester, and 10% spandex, the Haute In The City Dress is meant to be dry cleaned only. I had excellent results putting my dress in a lingerie bag in the washer and drip drying though.

Because of the tight strap in the back, and the odd breast sizing, I really don't see this being worn either in or out of the bedroom for me. I was so excited for it to arrive, but it was just a big let down.
