So remember back in April, we told you about that 3D IMAX porn flick that was being released in Hong Kong? It's called Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy and it's based on a classic Chinese erotic story called The Carnal Prayer Mat. The story's about an old scholar enticed into a world of harems and orgies by a duke, and it's gotten mixed reviews.
However, the first 3D IMAX porn flick outsold Avatar at the box office. No, we're not joking. It brought in $360,000 on the first day, while Avatar brought in only $340,000. It earned $4.1 million in Hong Kong, making it Hong Kong's biggest hit this year. It made $1.1 million in Australia in six weeks
The movie was released this month in South Korea and is scheduled to be released in Italy, France and India next month. And ... it's coming to America.
“Audiences that are better educated, more sophisticated in mind ... will readily appreciate the origin of this film as an adaptation of a Chinese classic,” the film's director, Christopher Sun, said. “These viewers are prepared to take erotic elements as part of the cinematic experience instead of the film's total package.”
Mainstream theaters won't show it, so it hasn't been rated and there's not yet a release date. But the film's promoters are certain they'll find a place for their movie.
