What would you do if your 10th grader came home with a summer reading list that includes books depicting (with words) graphic lesbian sex scenes? Would your reaction change if one of the scenes was between a 31-year-old woman and a 13-year-old girl?
Parents in a Jersey school district were faced with these questions when their kids came home with books like Norwegian Wood and Tweak (Growing up on Methamphetamines), which featured an abundance of drug use and a gay orgy.
Apparently, a committee of teachers, librarians and school administrators decided on the list and it was approved by the board of education. And though only a few people complained, they're reworking the summer reading list. And next time, they're gonna run it by the parents first.
“Some of the language is inappropriate,” said Chuck Earling, superintendent of Monroe Township Schools in Williamstown, N.J. “We were not trying to create controversy. We were just trying to get students to read.”
