What's your opinion on 50 Shades of Grey?

It was inaccurate, but it did not offend me. It was written to be a real story about BDSM. It was just written for fun I suppose. I liked the action and love story. They did portray Christian as more abusive than master but, I understood that when I read it.

I think it's more of a fantasy but I still enjoyed the series.

Inaccurate, offensive and REALLY poorly written. I think Gerald's Game should be a prerequisite, before you can read Grey. Just sayin'.

The wife loves it but I feel like there is just as good if not better stories people have wrote available for free online.

i find it offensive b/c it portrays bdsm incorrectly (i'm someone who strives for accuracy,) but then it's like twilight again for me (i tried reading it during the hype) in that it's poorly written, i don't give a damn about most of the characters, and just plain don't see the appeal.

Other - I've never read it and have no real desire to. I hear it's complete and utter crap. It's kind of funny to look at it on Amazon...one star reviews for days!

I hate it. A lot. Not only is it VERY poorly written, it's a very inaccurate portrayal of the BDSM community. Christian is abusive and psycho. Clearly not every individual who considers themselves a part of the BDSM community is batshit crazy ... more
This is how I feel.

Inaccurate with very bad writing... not necessarily offensive.

I haven't read the books so far and I think I will not do it.
I have the prejudice that it's wishy-washy mainstream bullshit. Please don't challenge my prejudices.

I read half of it and then just skimmed the rest. TERRIBLE. Not only is it horribly written but Christian is CREEPY! He's a controlling, abusive person who doesn't represent what a dom is supposed to be like. The messages presented by the book are awful! It's full of "it's okay to be stalked, controlled, and made to do things you don't want to do" messages! There were several scenes in the book that made me feel so uncomfortable...like I'd just read a scene of sexual abuse. For example him spanking her harder when she obviously didn't like being spanked...what the hell was that!? And the contract! Um a partner should be able to figure things out as fast or slow as he/she finds comfortable, not forced to sign something with stuff on it that they are obviously unsure about!!!
It worries me that this book of drivel and disturbing messages is so popular.

I couldn't even get a 4th into the first book. I was bored and it was poorly written. When I mentioned this to few friends they kept insisting I just need to keep reading. I'm a person who never puts a book down and never pick it up again. I'm persistent on getting through a book. But with this one I just can't. It's just that boring to me.

Poorly written and sadly misleading. The disregard for proper safety is completely irresponsible, in my opinion.

I never read it, but I am saddened by the fact that it has made kink a lot more commercial. I mean heck, I see whips and handcuffs for sale around the book at the local Spencers store now! I enjoyed being a part of a secretive fetish group

I don't know anything about BDSM or what the book talks about, so I can't vote on that. But from little snippets I've read or people have talked about, the book is poorly written. Definitely not for me.

I wrote a review on them. To sum it up, they are terribly written. The sex scenes use the same descriptive words repetitively. There is no plot. Christian pressures Anastasia about being into BDSM and keeps stalking her after she asks him to leave her alone. And Anastasia will have one scene where she loves BDSM but then the next she'll yell at Christian for making her do the scene because she hates BDSM. It makes her seem a bit unstable. Do not read. Find another BDSM book. Anything would be better.

I honestly feel that 50 Shades of Grey is a dangerous book. The relationship portrayed in that book is much more like domestic abuse than consensual BDSM. I see a lot of women entering the bdsm community now who are completely uninformed and I honestly worry they are going to fall prey to predators in the community who look for women like that.

I can't stand it. Even if you ignore the blatant misrepresentation of the Dom/Sub kinks, the main character is caught up in a relationship with a man who is horrifyingly abusive and borders on stalking. I didn't find Mr. Grey sexy or charming. He actually frightened me. The way he bought her a phone so he could call her whenever he wanted and just showed up at her house if she refused to answer him, or at one point flew out to her mothers (yikes!) unannounced all scared the living daylights out of me. That wasn't romantic that was abusive. It was controlling. And it was downright scary.

What really concerns me is the way these books are pandered as a good love story and women are reading them thinking this is a healthy relationship. It's anything but. Mr. Grey is obvious the older person in the story who supposedly has experience but instead of exhibiting any respect or patience for Ana he just controls her and takes advantage of the fact that she is young and naive. It worries me to think people might try to enter the BDSM lifestyle using these books as a starting point. Especially younger, impressionable women who could be easily taken advantage of or lured into uncomfortable situations.
