#EdenLit - Club Meeting - July 2 Open Discussion

Contributor: Ansley Ansley
Not everyone wants a mentor, as it can be a daunting process. But, we're a community of reviewer's - we're all writers at heart. I don't see how it could go wrong.

I would love to do things like send a few people who know they can make it to the meeting a prompt (Like: Scarlet Fox is going to steal your seat at the meeting Cedar. You can reply to her but you must replay as though you are her GrandMother...stay in character) I think this would help with character development discussions and also perspective discussions.

ok... for me...

1) Sorry I am late!!! I'm a goofball.

2) The Forums. Posting in the Forums is I hate to say it... an ugly mess for stories or submissions. The Forums are great for discussion style Forums, but not for actual reading of something. Possible suggestions: Stormy suggested a blog ring. That could work!

3) Bring older submissions to the front with a random old submission award; trying to bring the "old" blood back by show facing their work.

4) Get to know an author. Interview style questions for the author on how they wrote something specific in one of their stories/submissions and why they did that and not something else.

5) I'm still a goofball but will post this so I can bee seen!

Ok...don't worry about the forum issue. We're working on some things. It's never going to be perfect, but we'll get it as close as possible.

Annnd HELLO sleepy head. Kinda late for you, err early, that is.

That's a great topic Izzaba Should we start specifying short or word minimums in the topic suggestions? That would allow short story writers or short commentary writers the option and a specified place to receive recognition. It would also leave it open for writers who like longer pieces to post...and a prompt to do so.

I think that could be fun... a more write as you go thingie, where say around Thanksgiving close the doors, edit like a fiend till the week before Christmas, then post the finished products at Christmas time. With the possibility of voting for a possible future publication.

Some great suggestions! I have no idea how a blog ring works If someone can explain maybe it's doable? I do know that we are going to get an easier forum layout that will have our work posted in one spot NOT mixed in with everything else. Bear with us for just a bit longer!

I would love to maybe stir some interest from older members.

Interviewing an author d=sounds like fun as well...we could grill them good!

We know you're a goofball but we love you...and we'd love to see you doing your series work again.

I know for me, I prefer to write novellas and find the short stories... well... that's inside my head. I hate having a word cap per post, then how does it show up on the page?

It gets frustrating, then I just end up shrugging my shoulders and forgetting about it.

Ok so we've got a million suggestions. What do we want to do for the rest of July and August? It's gonna take some time to get this all correlated and trialed. Should we pick some topics like usual, give me some time to get everything in some semblance of order and then start implementing stuff over the next few months?

I'll admit I've not read through all the posts, so my apologies if this was already suggested, but what about something similar to NANOWRIMO (National Novel Writing Month) only for short stories or whatever is accepted. A month of intense writing in conjunction for NANOWRIMO (in November) and then have votes on the winner...maybe some sort of prize or double points or something for the winner?

I thought the same thing Librarian but I think they are going to make some very nice changes here so it will be so much easier for us to find these things.

I think this month, we should just have a poetry open, and of course, the open topic for those that want to continue a submission or would like to submit something else.

Poetry open, just write poetry. On any topic.

We have been discussing doing something like that! I will definitely be addressing this idea since it seems to have really taken root.

If we do do a poetry open, I'd say get EF to advertise the heck out of it with emails, banners and more.

I like this idea as well. To write and then finish it off after a few months of adding to it.

Terrific. I found more info on Eden Lit (right under my nose, of course...maybe if I was less distracted by the glass toys on sale I would've found it sooner...) and I can't wait to start writing for y'all!

A lot of famous novelists and writers started in Playboy, maybe I'll get my start on Eden Lit.

Character Limits on the Forum

There are character counts on each portion of the thread - the main post and all of the comments thereafter.

The word count is roughly 800 words, but the character count is 8,000 with or without spaces. This also includes any formatting.

That probably will not change because it's essentially the same template for the review program.

However, there are ways around it.

One way is to run your document through a word processor to get the character count, divide that by 8(000) and that will be how many tabs you'll need open.

Once you post the main body, in rapid succession open the thread in the other tabs and post the next sections sequentially.

If done quickly enough, it will prevent anyone the change to comment before the whole thing is posted.

Perfect Example: Community Chronicle

I didn't have any magic powers or anything. Just fast fingers.

That would help out so much to know that it is going on and where to find the writing to read it before next meeting and tell the writer what you like or dislike about it.
