Welcome everyone to the Beer Selection Workshop! I have a considerable amount of information to give out tonight, so I’m going to have to plow through this pretty quickly so it doesn’t take all night. But don’t worry, it will still be plenty of fun. Feel free to ask questions throughout the workshop, and I’ll do my best to answer them.

I was once taught that a good way to start a discussion is to lead with a joke, so I'll do so here. What do light beer and having sex in a canoe have in common? Both are fucking close to water.

This past winter we tried an ale at a pizza place that specializes in beer, and we tried this AMAZING beer that tasted like hazelnuts... I cannot find it anywhere as I FORGOT the name!

For sure, he brought me some apricot wine he got in California a few months back and it was phenominal. I don't remember who makes it, but next time I go with him I remember what the bottle looks like.

That will be about the last I discuss light beer and its close American relatives. We all know what it tastes like, and you can do better.

OK, to start this off, I want all of you to grab a beer if you haven’t already. It will make you feel better and will even help me in leading this workshop. While you're grabbing that beer, get a glass to pour it into. There will be no quaffing out of a bottle or can during this workshop. OK, I'll wait for you get back with your beer(s) and glass. Don't pour the beer into the glass until I tell you to do so. Everyone please post the name of the beer you are drinking here as well.

I found some blackberry wine in the clearance section of our Meijer's and it was so good! Too sweet to drink the whole thing, but for one glass? Amazing with a sweet dessert.

Why can't I save on dishes and drink straight out the bottle?

Beer Trivia!: The Egyptian pyramids were built on beer. Stonecutters, slaves, and public officials were paid in a type of beer called "kash" - which is where the word “cash” originated.

By the way, I’ll be putting out trivia like this throughout the evening. I’m not just doing it just because it’s interesting, but remembering it might give you a chance to win a gift card at the end of the workshop…

We have been experimenting with new types of beer, Sigel and I. Coming from families where alocoholism is rampant we were undrstandably cautious while our children were young, but we've realized it's ok to have a yummy beer or wine with a meal. We want to teach our children HOW to drink socially and enjoy a tipple every now and again.

That being said we have decided Amber Bock is pretty good but wheat beers, at least the ones we've tried are thin and bitter.

Ok Im going to bite the bullet and do the Blue Moon, but only because I have a slight buzz already

You've not had a good wheat beer, then. They are lighter, certainly, but they can be as complex as any beer if you get a good one.

OK, I assume you've all gotten back to the computer by now, so I'll continue. Grab your glass in one hand and your bottle or can in the other. Tilt the glass slightly so you can carefully pour the beer down the inside of the glass. I assume you've all done this before, but hear me out. This time will be different. Once you've filled the glass about half way, turn the glass upright and finish pouring the beer straight into the middle of the glass from about 4 inches above the glass at a good, smooth rate. Oh, and grab a towel, just in case you poured the rest of the beer into the middle of the glass too fast or from too high. I hope I wasn't too late telling you that...!

I'd love to find one that it both light and sweet or even just mellow...I find wheat beers don't cause the tummy upset and gas that other beers cause.

No worries, everyone likes a little head.

Ahhhh proper beer pouring ensures just the right amount of "head". Learned how to do that in a pub in England. I loves me a good stout!
