#EdenUpdate - Forum Update - Suggestions Needed

Contributor: Antipova Antipova
A second thing I'd like, personally, is if we had the opportunity to edit posts even after somebody posts after us.

I know that it might seem like that would get confusing, if someone has replied to you, but the majority of forums I'm on (anything that's phpBB-based, and reddit, too) allow you to edit your post anytime. The way they prevent confusion is by marking at the top or bottom of the post "Edit occurred at 12:00:00 April 21" written by the system.

In use, most users are very good about explaining their edit if they make one. You'll see people go back and say "*Edit to fix grammar" or "Edit to fix broken link." Occasionally, you'll also see "Edit: I am clearing this post because I misunderstood the above poster, and got mad when I should not have. Apologies to all." I think all of these things are fine and even good to allow.

I haven't seen the system abused, either. So I don't know if everyone else thinks this is a good idea, but I would definitely support it.

No, still good to bring up. I think they let us do the pictures right away, but text would be nice too! I think we only discussed pictures in-depth.

*snort* You and your nuts.

I'd really love it. At least for the original thread posts for clubs or something. (Eden staff! Pleeeaaase!) That way the managers or hosts could update it when the club moves meeting times, a contest has ended, terms have been altered, website or contact emails have changed, or if it changes hands to another host. Cause even if you made a new thread with all the correct, current information people still seem to find and read the old ones to the irritation of the club managers lol.

Oh, totally for those important posts too! I know there's an old post about how the review program works, that's really outdated now, and when one of the staffers wrote on page (for example) 6 that it was obsolete and to follow (some link) to the new one, eventually that staffer's post is left behind on page six while other comments slowly fill up pages 7 and 8...

If the author of a post could edit the original, it would be super easy to just put at the top of the whole thread "ATTENTION, THIS THREAD IS OUTDATED, PLEASE SEE (new link)." It would save lots of confusion.

How about an option to show what threads have posts we have not read, and I don't mean the lightbulbs. Currently, we can not differentiate between a post we have not read and one that has no new posts but had a new vote in the poll. And along with this, an option to "Mark all as read" in a folder. This would allow us to more easily determine new posts since our last visit to the forums.

I'd also really like to be able to "unread" threads. I usually check out threads based on their lightbulb, but if I looked at a thread even once, I'm saddled with the lightbulbs forever and it totally funks up my flow.

I like this idea too. Sometimes I hesitate to even open a thread to read what its about knowing that that will cause a lightbulb to be on for it when maybe its not that interesting.

I hate to keep comparing EF to my knitting site, Ravelry, but I can't help it. The programming on that site is so good. On Ravelry, you can mouse over a thread and click on the shift key to see a flyout of the first 200 or 300 characters of the post. Maybe EF can implement something like that.

This or letting us mark threads as unread will solve this problem.

Yes, a preview of the thread would be A++ fab.

I'd also like (I'm comparing it to my other forum site, now, too) to be able, like Kindred said, to mark all forums read. (Or UNread.)

Oh, and a block user/block thread/block forum option would be loverly.

I would like to see a search engine using keywords, reviewers could help with the keywords, A separate area for games, comparisons and polls, and the ability to mark a thread as 'read' to save re-reading it a few times-it would pick up where you left off. Also a positive symbol for very good posts, opposite of bad flags. Thanks!

Sorry to repost, but a special flag for administrators, EdenFantasys workers, to let us know the post is important, informative or has advice and tips.

Not related to the forums, but how about the ability to customize our personal pages? I'd love to have options as to what appears on the page and where. Also, I'd love if we could upload wallpapers/pictures to really personalize the page.

I like the archiving vs deleting idea; however ,as stated, many threads are still going. I'd rather see longer threads than have so many dupes I guess.

A really nice keyword search would be appreciated throughout the site! Specifically I mean being able to use -something, like in google.

When I wanted to look up the Fun Factory Wave, if I just searched "wave" most of the results in the reviews section were for the groovies wave. I tried searching "wave -groovies", which in google would give you all the hits that had "wave" and did not have "groovies", but here it ignored the minus sign, and it was like I searched "wave groovies."

Also! If personal pages and the messaging system get tweaked, I think lots of people would like it if our unique usernames didn't show up. Right now, when you send a message you can see the username someone signed up with instead of just their forum handle... this seems like it's sensitive information for some people, because I've seen some that look like real full names, or email address beginnings. This logon name appears at the very top of the contributor page, too.

It would be ideal if that were private information, I think. Not sure if it's on-topic, though.

I believe the Fun Factory Wave doesn't show up in a product search because it is discontinued. That is intentional. However, you can still find it listed under reviews and discussions.

Right---I was searching for reviews of it (it its discontinued status is probably why they were so hard to find).

I used that example because the item I actually wanted was on page 11 of this search (just "wave" under reviews), but if I could have searched "wave -groovies -wand -rabbit" it probably would have shown up on the first page.

And, yes, I could also search "fun factory wave" to get it right away... but the point is, having a more sophisticated search engine would be useful when people only have partial information. And that's just as true in the forums as it is in reviews... if I want to search for information about a topic that has two general meanings, and one comes up more often, begin able to say "-distraction" makes it easier to find what you really want.

Just a suggestion, no worries if it doesn't happen. Everything is still findable as is.

That was the case with mine early on. But when I noticed it, I changed it to match my "Darling Jen". So at least it is changeable.

RE: Glossary of Terms and Materials

I know I have seen this somewhere on the site, but whenever I deliberately search for it I can't find it. I just scoped the main page and didn't see it anywhere in there and if there's a link to it under the dashboard menu on the left-hand side I'm oblivious to where exactly.

I always look for it when it comes time to write a review so I think it would be helpful to have a link to it directly on the main page in either the left-hand menu with the description of toy categories, or as one of the bolded links on the right-hand side.

What does everyone else think?
