It's offensive, and I believe that people should learn to rephrase things as to not offend others. Honestly, people need to learn to think before they speak.

Yes, it's offensive.

I use it, and I'm a lesbian. I think it has as much power as we give it. gay didn't originally mean homosexual to begin with, so it's kinda funny if people are saying something is so gay, cause it's so happy?
I think it's a trend in language. There are a lot of people that use it hatefully, but that's more their attitude and tone of voice, rather than the word.

I used to, but I've gotten a lot harder to offend these days. I never use it out of respect for people who are offended by it, and I usually find that the people who use it a lot are not all that bright, so I associate it with stupidity. The dumb jocks in high school, or the wanna-be homeboys--you know, the douchebags--liked to call everything "gay" when I was growing up. They always sounded like idiots

I will occasionally refer to something as "gay" but not in a negative sense. Like I might say, "Have you ever watched Glee? That show is so gay," and I mean that it has some overriding stereotypical gay quality to it...that, and every gay friend I have seems to love it (well, the gay male friends, that is). I am aware that it's a stereotype, and I don't expect that all gay men love shows like Glee...just a lot of them do. Like lesbians seem to love big dogs for some reason. Ever notice that?

In any case, I don't use gay as a pejorative, because there's nothing offensive or negative about being gay, so...

I'm not offended or hurt, but I quickly lose respect for the person who said it and may comment on it. If they continue to use the word in that way, I'll likely avoid associating with them.

Depends on the context. Between friends probably not. Between strangers yes

I used to always say it, I had 1 gay friend that hated when i said it & told me it was offensive so now i say "that's lame" instead of using the word gay. But I do have gay friends that say "thats gay". idk. I never thought it was though. But I stopped saying it to be respectful.

Except that "dumb" isn't an abstract word. It means a similar thing to retarded, and can and does easily offend people who think of themselves as stupid.

gay originally meant happy, light hearted, and carefree.
using the word for that definition is okay.

but yeah, when people say it in an negative way, yeah its offensive. they're placing negativity toward a group of people.

Very offensive! Why is "Gay" synonymous with "lesser"?

I don't think so but I have a quite vulgar and fucked up sense of humor to begin with. I tend to offend MOST people.

OMG. People who think this is offensive need to just put their BIG KIDS pants on and get over it. It is "just" a word with many uses. Simmer!

When I was a child and that was a while ago. We always said it when we didn't like something. But then like was every other word too. But As I got older so did my vocabulary. I don't even think that comes out of my mouth. What I see is the kids today who want to change words like Gay, and retard. Soon these words won't even be known to us. I hope. But to the ones who use them in a negative tone. When you use them you draw more attention to yourself as an idiot than anything else. These days I almost feel sorry that they can't evolve with the rest of us. My friend has the best come back ever. He just turned and said I feel sorry for you. The guy just stood there with his mouth open. He didn’t know what to say. My friend walked off with a smile. He says 95% of the time it works.

I'm bi and yell "Ha! Gay!" a lot. For me this sort of thing is a way to show it doesn't get under my skin. I don't do it to be mean, so I'm mindful of others. If anyone is saying anything (whether to do with preference, race, social status, or anything else) then it's offensive.

it depends on who you're with and the conversation. i generally find it offensive re: using it as a derogatory term/in place of "stupid." but again, context and all that.

Yes, I usually just say "what? say that again?" usually making them consciously say it twice will get them thinking, stumbling on their words, etc.

Yeah, it's offensive, but it isn't the same level of offensiveness as calling someone a homophobic slur. In a similar vein, saying "that's retarded" is offensive, but calling someone a retard is much more offensive.

I feel like there's an age cutoff....if someone says it who is under, maybe, 15, I will give it a pass because of lack of maturity. Otherwise, that's just not cool.

I do wish that would just go away as a term, though.

I find it offensive. If someone I know uses that term in that way then I lost respect for them and start rethinking the friendship if they get upset when I call them out on it.
