Marriage is a right. It shouldn't matter if you're gay or straight. You can't say that something is okay for one person and not okay for another. No matter what the reason is.

50 years ago, the same argument was being fought, except it was to allow black and white people to marry each other. And before that, it was to allow black people the right to vote or the right to go to school with white people. Before THAT it was to allow women to vote.

Denying gay people the right to marry and have the benefits of marriage (tax deductions, medical decisions, health benefits, etc.) is just as bad as saying black people can't get married to white people. It's the same thing.

Equal rights should be given to ALL citizens. That is what the fight is for.

Does it really matter if gay people get married? Does it change the value of your own marriage?

The right for women to vote came after the right for black people to vote. Just saying.

no it does not change any value in my own marriage, every couple has their own problems marriage isn't always a walk in the park.

They shouldn't be told they can't get health insurance or benefits, medical decisions etc.

So I don't know what the issue is i guess other than religious belief about it. And there's not a thing wrong with black marrying white etc.

I understand that 2 guys or 2 girls being intimate isn't right; that's my only true issue with it.

It isn't right, to you. But no one should say what is right for others. And THAT is what this whole fight (the fight for civil rights) is about.

It isn't right for you. However those who are gay it is very right for them. That is who they are.

Not allowing them to marry denies them the right to be at each others bed side if they are at the hospital as they are not married. They are not allowed to help with making medical decisions because they are not the spouse. Even though chances are that person will know better than anyone what the ill person would want. They can't be on the same insurance plan because they are not married.

i never thought people actually would say/write hate to anyone. im not hating anyone, i just have an opinion about the topic discussed. why would someone beat or kill someone over it none of that makes any sense to me

Really? Really!? REALLY!!? Your surprised by this? Just now this occurred to you? Have you even read this thing you call the bible!? Because the very first introduction many of us had to the idea of killing someone for being gay IS the Bible.

Gowning up in Christian school I was introduced to the Bible very early including* Leviticus 20:13. link

“If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them.”

It makes perfect sense to us because of the bible. And somehow despite the book you claim to base your life around and that you’ve read calling for death to homosexuals you’re somehow surprised that it happens? Being surprised by this requires…I don’t even know where to begin analyzing the type of cognitive dissonance required for a devote Bible reader to be surprised at gay violence requires. It would be like someone living in Maryland who self-identify as a crab fisherman being surprised that crab cakes exist and… and I can’t even produce quality snark over this…. mind-boggled. REALLY!!? This is ,sadly, not a rhetorical question my jaw was on the floor on this one.

*Other things that I learned from the bible the first time include bestiality. Thank you Exodus 22:19 link for beating the internet to the punch on that one.

When my mom was dying in the hospital, she asked to see my partner, whom she loved like a daughter. (To be clear, I am female, and this partner is female.) I had to LIE so that my significant other could see my dying mother, because same-sex partners don't have visiting rights in hospitals. I told them that she was my sister.

If we had been able to marry, she would be able to have visited my mom without lying about it, as "family". Because of the way the law stands now, this woman, with whom I have been in a relationship for NINE YEARS is not legally my "family". Therefore, she doesn't have visiting rights.

If *I* end up in the ICU, she will not be able to visit me without lying. If she does, I will not be able to visit her.

THAT is one reason among many why I want gay marriage to be legal.

I do feel that a lot of the prejudice against the LGBT community stems from the Bible. While there might be some 'good' in the Bible, I think it's important to recognize that there is also a lot of 'bad'...it's not just one big book of rainbows and butterflies.

I am curious if the people who are not in favor of gay marriage, are for or against premarital sex?? The Bible makes it clear that premarital sex is a sin (like homosexuality), but too many times, I hear Christians who think homosexuality is wrong, but they have no problem with premarital sex. All in all, I think the Bible is one big self-edit book.

Also I feel I should add before someone straw-mans what I said. I'm not saying that Christians or the Bible endorse violence. I'm saying being surprised at gay violence requires a incomprehensible degree of ignorance of the actually text of the Bible. Even if you believe it doesn't endorse violence makes the concept of doing so clear that its misuse to that end should not shock any reader. As well as the history of GLBT issues, the long long history of the bible being misused for this and other things. Current event both local and worldwide. The history of other religions where smiler things have happen etc.

You can stand by the bible in spite of this, as does most of the country and presumably this forum, but being shocked by this is shockingly ignorant.

An analogy: I'm a scientist a bachelors in a "hard" and getting a second degree in a "soft" one. I definitely believe in science in all it forms however people would laughs at me if after all this training I was shocked when science is misused.

Nope.

Gay couples also don't have citizenship rights, family health insurance rights, etc. There are hundreds of rights tied to being married in this country, and that's why the system needs a revamp -- and the rights should be available to all, gay or straight.

It's not just a declaration of being married. It's about being ALLOWED to be there for someone they love.

All shell fish (like crab, lobster, and shrimp) are very high in cholesterol. The higher your cholesterol the higher your chances for cardiovascular disease. Such effects leads to high blood pressure, heart attact or stroke. No thank you!

I eat it, maybe, once a year. Hardly enough to make my cholesterol shoot through the roof.
