It never occurred to me to butter the bread before it goes in to the toaster... I don't think that's a good idea.

I concur. My husband does that occasionally, when he uses butter right out of the fridge; a lot of times the butter melts, drips, and make a mess in the toaster oven...drives me nuts!

I have a feeling eri86 is talking about buttering it before you use a toaster oven or stove/oven, where there is no concern about the butter getting onto the heating mechanism.I know when I make a grilled cheese, I butter the bread beforehand & then toast it in a pan on the stove. My grandparents used to toast bread in the oven & that alllows the option to butter ahead of time, like you do with garlic bread. That said, I use a regular toaster, (that many already know I unplug after every use do you unplug toaster ).

I think buttering it before would be a bad idea.

I am sure you are right. I always forget about toaster ovens. But I answered how I personally roll... and to me... toaster = toast

Does anyone else melt the butter in the frying pan, and then just place the bred in the pan for grilled cheese? I do that all the time.

I do that, but if the butter isn't rock hard, I usually spread it on the bread, then put it in the pan, only because I use less this way! My practical side says, take the easier route. But I really should just always melt it first because it's grilled cheese, what the hell difference does a little extra butter matter, ha ha!

Right after it pops out of the toaster so the butter melts in all the little cracks and crevices.

If I do an easy garlic bread, I butter and garlic the bread before placing it in the toaster. I try not to do it too often, since the butter burns onto the elements.

You could wrap it in foil first to control the dripping, but that can create a steamed bread you might not like. I know I want that lovely Maillard reaction I so love, the secret to most of the flavors I crave! I could eat toast the rest of my life, but give me plain bread & I gag, unless it's the crust!

After, unless I'm "toasting" it by frying it in a pan -- then the butter goes on before. (In case you're wondering what I'm talking about, it's a bit like how you butter bread and then put it in the pan when you're making a grilled cheese sandwich that's not on the grill.)

I butter mine after I toast it if it's going in the toaster, but if I'm pan frying it to toast it, I butter it before.

As soon as it come out of the toaster so the butter melts. I dont think putting it on before would work well...

I have a regular toaster, not a toaster oven, so butter is always done after!

As for the grilled cheese question, it doesn't seem to matter what I do with the butter. I never can manage to flip the sandwich without it falling apart and dripping melted cheese into the pan, so I just make someone else fix grilled cheese sandwiches for me!

I butter toast after it is toasted. If I'm making a grilled cheese then I will butter the bread before I cook it in the pan.

If it was Texas toast and I was using it to hold some sort of shredded meats, I would butter beforehand. Any other situation would be absurd!
