New Monthly Contest- $50 cash prize!

Contributor: Program Manager Program Manager
We’re starting a new monthly award for best review! Each month, I’ll post a list of top ten reviews here, to be voted on by anyone in the review community.
The details:
-Email me your votes at partners @ EF by the 1st of the month.
-The winner gets a $50 cash prize. Yes, cash, not a voucher to the store.
-When emailing, please send just the name of the review you’re voting for and your contributor name in the text (don’t worry voting is kept anonymous, but I need that info). Yes, you can vote for yourself.
-ALL reviews (assigned and not assigned) are eligible for this award.

Let me know what you think about this voting process, I’m still experimenting with different ideas for it. Do you want to be able to nominate reviews for the award? Want to have a totally open vote, so any review can be voted for?

Sooo… here are the nominations for September. Get votes in by noon on Wed., October 1st.

Cool! I think a top 10 is a good idea, so it's easier to decide -- but how are the top ten determined exactly?

The nominations are currently picked by a staff member, based on overall quality, compliance with writing guidelines, complete info, and readability.

I'm so flattered to be nominated. I don't think I have a snowball's chance in hell, but I'm still flattered to be listed. Thank you.

I really like this idea but an actual poll on the forum would probably work a wee bit better than e-mailing.

I agree with this as well.

As do I! Either way, I think this feature is awesome because all these reviews are ones that I missed before, and now get to read.

I think they're asking for suggestions on how to vote because they have too many ideas. *cough* So, it sounds like the email version is just kinda what they wound up with, to get the ball rolling.

I'm not sure how a totally open vote would work, would it work like the "review helpfulness" poll? Would it be IP based to prevent multiple votes from single people?

I'm actually comfortable with staff selecting nominees.

A poll is a good idea. We'd have to implement something new in the system, so for now email will be the way to do it but I'll look into something more effective.

I like the idea of a poll definitely!
But... I'm in classes, so the reminder emails WOULD come in handy for someone who's pretty scatterbrained ... just sayin. hehe.

I really like the idea of the staff member picking the top 10 - that way they at least narrow the field somewhat. We could always have a pole on the reviews to anonymously cast your vote for the review that you like best - saves having a bunch of emails sent to the staff members.

Although like Aliki said - I really really appreciate reminder emails

Also thank you for nominating me - I couldn't believe it. I wanted some guidance on what I could do to appear on that list, and lo and behold I was on it. Thank you thank you thank you

What an excellent idea. Very nice compilation of reviews as well. I am honored to be included. Thanks! It is nice to get the reminder e-mail and I think that a poll would be a good way to handle it, but then I suppose it could be a shot to my ego if I was nominated and didn't receive many votes. With e-mail at least the overall results could be kept quiet and you would just say who the winner was. Maybe that could be done with a poll too.

There's no need to release poll results--you can disable the ability to see the results after you've posted, which I think is probably the best option.

Congrats to all of the current top ten. I think it's wonderful, and I'm looking forward to reading the reviews. (In about 2 seconds!)

To be the devil's advocate here, once again under the current rating system won't this naturally drive up the rankings of all ten reviewers?

It may very well be deserved, but was it considered in light of the recent controversy over rankings?

If it makes you feel better, mine went down from 4.3 to 4.2 after being nominated. *shrug*

What's the big deal if the rankings are driven up (which would only happen if people voted on the "useful"ness of the review)? They are obviously good reviews chosen for a reason.

I think this is a great idea that will drive people to write some really good reviews, and reward people who do.

I don't care if quality rankings are driven up. I have an issue with the randomness of the entire process, and I'm surprised that more people don't.

"Spiking Glue" had a quality review- entertaining, informative, well written, etc. She informed us that her ranking went down. I checked the stats on that review. (Not others she has written.) 12 comments including her own, 6 extremely useful, 1 useful, 1 not useful vote. So why did her ranking go down with this contest?

For those of you that read the forum regularly, I want to make one thing clear. I do not give a *shit* about my own rating. I care about the ranking process for what it should be for everyone, and I believe that should reflect quality. Bulma, Jimbo Jones and others deserve a much higher ranking than I have, and I'm happy about that. But there are people who either do not understand this process or who won't fight it.

I loved a list of "top ten" review that I should look at. Maybe it should be an option that reviewers themselves can generate. If Bulma, Jimbo Jones, Epiphora created really cool, I'd look. (Time permitting.)

What we have now is fucking bias built into the system and caused by Eden. I guess everyone is OK with that. (Probably completely out of this thread.)

I do agree that a poll would make for easier voting. It would also be nice to see a link to "Top Ten October Reviews You Should Vote On" on the front page of Eden.

I'm not informed about any ranking controversy, so I can't say a lot about that, but it does seem unfair that Spiking Glue's rank when down just because more people were attracted to the review. Maybe people should get a major ratings boost if they're nominated for the Top Ten award? Like a whole point up?

Firstly it seems you really do give a shit about the ratings, which is fair enough. I've done a lot of what Eden Fantasies has asked in terms of raising your rating; but it hasn't affected my rating in the slightest. In fact like Spiking Glue it has gone down.

I prefer that the staff members nominate the reviews because they go through all of them (at least the verified ones for sure) - whereas reviewers like us gravitate to products we want to check out or just friends reviews. I hardly think that gives everyone on here a fighting chance.

After all when the top 10 is posted you get to vote for whomever you choose. It seems the fairest option to me at least. Unless I'm missing something?

Why do you trust upper-level reviewers to choose the top 10 over Eden staff members? Like Sienna mentioned, staff people have probably read more of the reviews than we have.

I really still don't understand where you're seeing a bias.
