I am pretty much a beginner and want a new anal plug. I got the organics and I can handle it just fine. Wanted something slightly bigger. Open to suggestions, but had some ideas.
I wouldn't go for any of them. First two are IMHO bigger than what I would consider for a beginner. I'm intermediate (and a tight-ass) and 1 3/4" is the limit of what I'm going to be able to insert. The third is minimally slimmer but has a killer texture. The jelly one has the most appropriate size but it's not phthalate-free. It might sting your butt-hole.
The classic butt plug shape is IMHO easiest to insert. All the bulbous heads, rapid widening and so forth make it harder to get in. Something like this could be a great choice. It's body-safe and medium in size - you won't "outgrow" it so fast. I'm contemplating buying a set of "plugs of lust" but EF carry only 2 of them. They are very cheap considering that they're silicone and they have a very well though-out design.
On the other hand I'm just a tight-ass who thinks 1 3/4" is the top of her capabilities so you don't have to listen to me
Pleasure plug recommended by orchid above is a great choice.
Make sure it's silicone (not rubber or jelly) and something not too large,
should be comfortable and must have a good flared base..
Here's a couple more, there are many other good choices.
There are too many plugs that I would recommend before any of these four for a beginner. I am actually working on a review of the Happy Valley Pleasure Plug 2. I feel it would be an ideal plug for beginners. I'd also second the recommendation for the Bootie. Additionally check out some of the smaller Tantus plugs.
I absolutely recommend a Pure Plug in whichever size suits your tastes. (And we can all handle different sizes out of the gate---just because some people want to start with plugs under an inch, doesn't mean everyone will. The Pure Plug Medium was my first plug (I'd used some dildos and the "organics", as you say, first), but I slid it right in without warmup the first day I had it out of the box.
I did my best to showcase the sizes available in my review of my Pure Plug, though maybe the Pure Plug 2.0 is more along the lines of the size you're looking for. Check the reviews of that to see what other people have warmed up with.
If you want something cheaper, CalEx makes an "Advanced Pacifier" that's the same as the one AvgJon linked above, but a little larger---it might be a good idea to try a size on something cheap before splurging on a Pure Plug---but if you're like me, you *will* want a Pure Plug eventually.

I second Antipova on the Pure Plugs! Rather then wasting your money on a bunch of craps, get a good quality Pure Plug instead.
If I found the right "Organics" it is 1 1/4" diameter. A good step up would be the Love Pacifier (Mentioned above) the Ryder or even the Pure Plug Large. All of these are made from safe materials and will stay in during use.
If you can take a larger size than those, the Icicles No. 14 would be a good choice, maybe the Pure Plug 2.0.
Whatever you choose, I would suggest as safe a material as possible (pure silicone, glass, metal). I had the organics plug but prefer a softer silicone, and it never would stay in me. Think about what sensations you want to pick a good shape. If you want the plug to stay in then pick one with a longer stem, if you want more of the probe feeling maybe something with bumps. As for getting a larger plug, my first plug was about 1 3/4 in diameter. It worked for me because I took it real slow and over time was able to take the whole thing.

Hehe---I took "organics" to mean flesh-and-blood cocks, but maybe I judged too quickly. I guess ichwillwaffles meant this.
Bootie linked above is one of my absolute favorites. I definitely recommend that one.
I also have The Big End and think it would be a good choice if your goal is to get something big (or stretch out for a penis).
It starts out small, so a beginner could definitely work with it, but if you aren't used to size you might not be able to get it in all the way or wear it for a long term.
Like others have said, make sure you choose one made of a body safe material (silicone, glass, steel)

The PurePlug is on my 'next purchase' list. Thanks for the great review.
Of the ones you picked out, I would say the Big End is the best, but there would be quite a difference between the 1.25" diameter of the Organics to the 1.75" diameter of the Big End. You might want to try something in between first. Some plugs to consider are the Ryder and Severin from Tantus the Advanced Pacifier that has already been mentioned or the Sexy Spades small if you want to go for something firmer (glass). The Pure Plugs are awesome as well, if you want something firm, but they do come at a price.
I voted for the Big End. It's silicone, and it's a classic shape. Having used that particular shape though, I can say that it's not the greatest for extended wear. I used to have a rubber version which had a tendency to slide out while walking around after 30-60 minutes. I currently use a Tantus Ryder for extended wear and love it.
I wouldn't get any of them. I would get the eden fantasies brand of beginner anal plugs. I recently wrote a review about them. They are amazing and you get a variety of quality toys for 21 bucks. It's a amazing product
Don't go over 1.5" unless you know you can take it. Pretty much everyone can take 1.5 if they can relax, but over that usually requires you to work up to it.
I would immediately ignore all plugs that aren't made out of silicone. Silicone is bodysafe, soft, and will last you for life. The jellies, PVCs and rubbers can leach chemicals, are hard to clean and care for, and tend to die after a year or two.
Other plugs: Tantus Ryder, Fun Factory Bootie, Tantus Severin. Look for one that has a rounded, more gradual taper on the bottom of the body as well, because that will make it more comfortable to remove. A long neck helps to keep the plug in place.
