Vixskin retaining smells, how bad is it?

Contributor: Nissa Nissa Nissa Nissa
Ok so the Spur is on sale and I'm thinking of indulging myself in my first vixskin toy but I'm a little wary when I read numerous reviews on the vixskin retaining smells.

Anyone with a vixskin toy care to shed some light upon this matter? Is it terrible? Is it noticeable?

Any silicone dildo will retain some odors. I never noticed my VixSkin products being any worse. Currently, I wash them with Climax Bursts toy cleaner and let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing them off. All I smell is the scent from the cleaner.

I would think regular boiling would also remove a lot of the retained odors.

I haven't noticed this either and I have about 6 Vixskins that I use a lot. I second the vote to boil them for a few minutes.

Cool, thanks. I was worried it was permanent. I'll keep this in mind and I'll probably start looking into toy cleaners as well

Sometimes Vixskin (as other silicone toys do) retain odors. However, if you leave the toys to air out for a day or so, the smell will dissipate.

My mentors explained something to me while I was reviewing a silicone dildo---adsorbtion! It's kind of nifty and that's what happens when silicone toys are consistently used anally. They can take on a weird smell and this why they recommended I put in my review that this particular toy (sil. anal plug) should not be shared without condoms. (Thanks Alan and Michele, if I stated this wrong then please do not hesitate to correct me.)

Ah so.. odors are generally linked to toys consistently used anally? I see, if this is true I doubt I'll have that problem. I am not at the "anal stage" in my kinkiness yet hehe.

That's the way I understood it!

We use the Spur anally on a regular basis. We haven't had any issue with odors. We, though, have noticed that having the toy soak for about 12 hours (or at least overnight, with us) in a soapy bath seems to "rid" of any odors when done directly after use. We have multiple silicone anal toys, and none have any odor at all. I know most people can't have a butt-plug sitting in their bathroom sink for 8 hours at a time, but it seems to keep all of the odors off of our toys.

My anal silicone toys smell shortly after having been washed. They do not retain the smell though. It is sort of temporary guess.

I wash my anal toys with spray on toy cleaner and rub it down with my hands pretty intensely to get rid of any residue. The toy will have a mixed smell of toy cleaner and the butt smell. I let it air out for a day and that helps it some.

None of my anal toys have ever retained a smell. I wash all my anal toys the same way and I do the occasional boil every other month depending on how actively I am using certain toys.

Thanks everyone that responded. This is pretty informative and I'll be sure to mention this fact whenever I get to try out any silicone toys reviewing the purchase of my Spur.

Interesting. I haven't noticed my Vixskin dildo taking on any odour at all and I have used it anally.

You could use a condom on the toy too.

It is adsorption, which means that certain chemicals are attracted to the surface of the silicone (just like the red color from tomato sauce that can get on plastic containers). The problem is generally limited to anal use (though if you soak them in tomato sauce you might get the red problem as well), and it isn't a safety issue - the dildo is still nonporous and can be cleaned and sanitized even if it smells.

Condoms work, but can be expensive. Try several different cleaners to see what works best. I use dishwashing detergent and find that washing the dildos in the shower and letting the water run over them for the time I wash my body does a good job of eliminating any butt smell.

You could also try heating them in an oven. If indeed adsorption is the mechanism, then it's a reversible process. Remember Le Chatelier's principle of shifting the equilibrium? Adsorption is, on the molecular level, an exothermic process, so in theory increasing the temperature of the system should reverse the absorption, causing desorption.

Going on the basis that silicone ovenware is safe for temperatures over 500 degrees Fahrenheit, putting your toys in a 400 degree oven for an hour shouldn't cause any harm. Would be interesting to see if it works!

I have 5 Vixskin toys and the only one that has for some reason been extra troublesome with smells is my Goodfella. Not sure why. But all silicone has the tendency hold on to smells, unfortunately, but never permanently. Silicone, unlike porous soft materials like rubber, does not absorb any bacteria. So the smells that you are getting are only on the surface of the toy, meaning eventually, sooner or later they'll wear off. Sometimes it can take weeks of being aired out (this was the case with my Goodfella) but eventually it goes back to having a neutral scent.

GREAT suggestion with the soapy water! Stealing this!

My Spur used to hang onto smells for quite a while (mostly the scents of my flavored lubes, so it wasn't all bad), but I've found that letting it air dry after cleaning and leaving it out for a bit, rather than using a cloth and then putting it in its container right after, helps a lot. Went from being banana-scented for a few weeks to only a few hours.

I have almost the entire line, and have never noticed any unusual smell to them.

I've done a couple of things. I've washed with soap and water, toy cleaner and water (with and with out a soft tooth brush), boiled (I do this anyway but it can still stink), a cornstarch paste for 15 mins (it's easier to use a bowl or something to keep it all contained so it can "soak"), and I've aired out. The one thing I've seen work the best it just clean it like normal and let is air out for an hour or two. Sometimes it takes longer, but it does lose the smell.

We've done the paste, but with baking soda, and it worked great. We never leave it as long as 15 minutes. Just 5 minutes or so in the bathroom sink has worked 100% of the time (so far).

I've never had an issue with mine, but I clean mine off very quickly after use. The fact that they can hang on to smells makes me a little more wary of their supposed safety, hmmm. I mean I know silicone is used a lot in medical settings, so it should be the safest material out there.
