Feminine "smell"...

Contributor: bayosgirl bayosgirl
Ok, this is kind of embarrassing... I'm a healthy female in her early 20's, have never had an STD or any kind of infection, but I've noticed in the last couple of years that my vaginal odor has gotten stronger. I am very clean-I shower every day of course, and sometimes twice-but even right out of the shower I can still smell it when I put my hand down there. My husband has never said anything, but I feel self conscious about it. It smells sweaty/spicy, not horrible, but I would like to have a neutral scent like I used to. If there's any correlation, I also sweat a lot from my armpits-but it's not a big deal because I can use antiperspirant. Here's the thing-I have VERY sensitive skin down there. I can't even use laundry detergent with fragrance or I'll be burning for days. I have been experimenting with various "organic"/natural soaps that use only essential oils for scent but have yet to find something that eliminates the odor. Can anyone recommend a good soap to use, or how do I get rid of this?! Thanks.

It very well could be your diet. I noticed since we stopped eating so much protein and eliminated processed foods that I rarely have body odor of any sort even when I do sweat (I notice the same thing with my husband). We use Dr. Bronner's Lavender Soap. I never use an antiperspirant anymore. I only use a non-alcohol deodorant if I know I am going to be outside doing strenuous work in the hot weather (not that we have it often here).

I know our diets can affect our mucous membranes and can make our natural lubrication a bit heady smelling and even can affect the taste slightly. If your diet is high in fresh fruits and veggies and you feel that can not be the issue, you may want to talk to your doctor about it. Also, medications can cause issues like this too.

This could be your new, natural scent. Mine changed when I turned 28.

I've heard that red meat and taking fish oil supplements can increase the scent. I agree with the others here and say that it's likely due to your diet.

analyze what you're eating. i've never heard of extreme odor changes (only that it changes depending when it is on your cycle). certain foods will make your pussy smell differently

Well, I don't think I eat an excess of protein but I do eat meat. (I heard that vegetarians taste better, and I assume that would apply to smell too-I don't know if I'd be willing to give up meat for that, though.) I eat very little processed food. I'm not on any medication so it can't be that either. HMM.

What about caffeine? Have you been drinking more coffee, tea, soda or diet drinks possibly?

i heard that fruit makes a man taste better so maybe it works for females also, and i know that if u eat onions or garlic or lots of spices that will change it also.

I drink either a cup of coffee or 2-3 cups of green tea every day...not a huge amount of caffiene.

Well, maybe is it just a hormonal change (our chemistry does indeed change as we age). If you feel it is abnormal or if it makes you uncomfortable, maybe talk to your OB/GYN about it at your next appointment.

i do not use soap at all, just warm water. if you must use soap, choose something very natural and with zero color to it. and when you use it, do not apply directly. just swipe your hand over it, swipe your hand over your vag, do NOT go inside with soap, and rinse quickly. soap can cause serious issues like UTIs and yeast infections, and BV, bacterial vaginosis.

i personally have alot of issues with UTIs and yeast infections and my gyno, after hearing my excuse of 'but it was an all natural handmade soap!' said, nope. if it had a color to it, it was probably the culprit.

make sure to wear cotton panties as they can help with sweating. i too sweat alot, i have hyperhydrosis. a condition which basically damns me to sweating like a fiend out of armpits, feet, hands, upper lip, and nowadays, yeah even groin area. its soo sexy lemme tell ya.

i find that right before my period my vajayjay smells really sweet like a flower or a cookie. it's so weird.

if you don't like your smell, i would recommend only cotton panties or a change in diet.

i personally tried yogurt to keep away yeast infections, etc, but was told by a doc it doesnt really do anything to help. are you totally certain you dont have a yeast infection or anything similar, such as bacterial vaginosis? both can be caused by soap, and yeast infections by bad diet, such as too much sugar... oops. guilty over here.

Are you 100% sure you don't have a yeast infection or vaginosis? I went a looong time with an odor that had no itching or burning until I had a gyno visit that included a swab, come to find out, I had vaginosis and didn't even know it.

It's also possible that your body is just changing... but I'd still look more into the other options before settling on that because I find it kind of odd that it's still detectable right after getting out of the shower.

It sounds like a natural smell. However, if you're sensitive to soaps and things like that, it could be that your vulva is reacting to the soap (as you said you sometimes wash twice a day).
