I took off the white head of my hitachi so I could soak in water and a bit of clorox, it was there for over a day I think. then I let it air dry on top of a paper towel for another day.

I now I can't put the head back on. Is it possible that it shrank?

It's possible, but with some effort you should be able to get it back on. I've taken mine off and it was tough getting it back on. Try just a little bit of lube, that should helo a lot.
